George's Marvelous Medicine is one of the many books which my little girl loves me to read to her as a bed time story. It is written by a well known children's author, Roald Dahl, the author of a number of best selling children's books, which include Matilda, The Twits and possibly the best known which was adapted into a movie,Charlie and the chocolate factory. Roald Dahl was born in Wales, he worked for the Shell Oil Company in East Africa, and during the Second World War he was an RAF fighter pilot. After he was badly hurt, and unable to be a fighter pilot any more, he transferred to Washington USA as an air attaché.
He moved back to England in 1960 to live in Buckinghamshire. From his home here, in the back of his garden in a little shed he wrote a lot of books.
His first stories were for adults. When he married and had children, and then grandchildren, he made up stories for them, which were later published for all to enjoy
Roald Dahl sadly died in 1990, aged 74, but his foundation, set up by his widow, supports the following charities Readathon, The Haemophilia Society, The British Epilepsy Association, Sargent Cancer Care for Children, Association of Charitable Foundations, UK Thalassaemia Society and The Sickle Cell Society.~*~*~*GEORGE'S MARVELOUS MEDICINE~*~*~* THE BOOK
George's Marvelous Medicine is the story of a wonderful 8 year old boy called George who lives with his parents and grandmother. Unfortunately for George, his grandmother is a surly old hag of a woman who may very well be the most demanding and ungrateful person in the entire world. The old woman scares and demeans George to the point that one day he decides to replace grandma's 11:00 medicine with a concoction that will finally do her some "good". He mixes up his own dose of medicine, one which may change the old hag, as opposed to the regular medicine which has not cured grandma's nastiness. Once he offers up a dose to his grandmother, he must then be prepared to deal with the results of his actions. He also must deal with the unexpected reactions of his mother and father. George finds himself losing control of the situation he created and the following events and their conclusions will leave him "quite trembly" as the author puts it.
As if this book is not good enough on its own, it is improved one step further by the addition of a number of imaginative and humorous illustrations. These illustrations are the creation of Quentin Blake who is also responsible for helping this author in The Twits, Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, Matilda and The Enormous Crocodile. *****WHAT GOE'S INTO THE SAUCEPAN****In the saucepan goes just about ANYTHING and EVERYTHING which George can find around the house and not forgetting in the farm that could possibly be used to make the MARVELOUS medicine :
Make -up
Toothpaste
Paint,all different colours
Denture cleaner
Hair remover
Medicines for the animals
And lots more.............................................but you will have to read the book to find out. ***WHY SHOULD YOU READ IT***
I think this book is delightful,I can't help but smile from the start to the finnish. Hollie-Rose loves this book, she laughs all the though it.She looks forward to her bed time because she knows that we will be reading George's marvelous medicine.
I believe that every parent and child who will read this book will get so much enjoyment out of it. Parents may even find this a good opportunity to instill positive lessons to their children regarding such things as medicine use or how to treat each other people. I do recommend this book purely for its imaginative story line and humor.
