I'm a girl with seriously curly hair, and I mean seriously curly! The term taming always seems to be used when describing what should be done with my hair. No matter what products I tried to use they didn't seem to work- wither making my hair greasy and lank or doing absolutely nothing at all. Then about three years ago all my friends started getting GHD's, what the manufacturers term "a new religion for hair" and indeed it is.
However, they were retailing at around £119 a pair three years ago, and these were just way out of my price range, being but a mere 6th form girl! I tried buying other straighteners but these did not seem to give the same impressive results as the GHD's did to my friends. Then last September my boyfriend came to the rescue and bought me a lovely little pair of
pink GHD's. They were ordered off the GHD website www.ghdhair.com and came complete in box with two free hair styling products in just three days. Added to this they had come down in price considerably. Even though these are limited edition they retail at £89.00 on their own website (obviously prices will vary depending upon which site you are on.)
So excitedly off I went to wash my hair with the shampoo and conditioner that came with the straighteners- which the manufacturers claim "cleanse and nourish" giving your hair tenderness on a daily basis. It has to be said I was a little dubious about this, after all it was just a shampoo, how much difference would it actually make? The answer to that is quite a lot. The 50p size of shampoo advised to use goes a long way, it is easy to see that this is high quality shampoo. Just using the shampoo and nothing else my hair felt much softer, as curly hair like mine if often quite coarse. I then went on to use the conditioner, which again lived up to the price you (or my boyfriend in this case) pay for it. It contains as anti frizz ingredient, which it claims protect against humidity and other such factors. It says in the booklet that it affects how the hair reacts with moisture. Though the conditioner does indeed make your hair feel silky smooth, and probably protects against the immense heat from the straighteners themselves, I found it made no difference if my hair was getting damp. The moment my hair comes in contact with even the slightest bit of moisture then it begins to frizz, beginning with the ends and then just turning into one massive ball of fizz.
So, I then went on to dry my hair, using a flat brush that they suggest you use. Now at this point I feel I have to explain what curly hair does when you blow dry it. It goes HUGE, and I mean literally huge. Because you have used the flat paddle brush no curls remain, just a mass of undistinguishable frizz upon your head. Admittedly my hair was very well conditioned frizz, but frizz none the less. I finished drying my hair- but had forgotten to actually plug the straighteners in. This made no difference as they heat up in under twenty second- when the little red LED has stopped flashing they are ready to use.
The irons themselves are solid ceramic, not ceramic plated like many of the others on the high street. This means an evenly hot distribution of heat through out the plates. They heat up to a maximum temperature of 210 degrees- which is hot enough to tame even the curliest of curls ( as I myself found out.) The process of straightening itself is a long and boring one, splitting the hair into sections and pulling the iron through small sections of the hair. The great thing about GHD's is that once the iron has been pulled through once that is it- no going over the same piece twice. There are no restrictions are they have a 360degree swivel cord at the base, meaning you can move them all over the head. I found I got much better at straightening my hair after a few weeks- it really is a case of practise makes perfect. Then after about twenty minutes of looking stupid with your hair parted in various sections the whole hair is straightened, and it literally shines with the products used on it.
So, why are GHD's so great? Personally I would recommend them to anyone who wants genuinely straight hair that lasts for longer than a day. Due to the immense heat the plates get up to the hair remains straight from the time you straighten it to the next time you wash it (as long as you don't get stuck in a rain storm.) The colour is pretty- though makes absolutely no difference to the product itself. The only problem I would say is that the pink ones only come in the thiner plates- people with hair like mine are crying out for a cute pink pair in the industrial sized plates! I just hope GHD bring out a pair- if so I will be first in line to make a purchase!
