The Les Paul Special New Century captures the spotlight. Jaws will drop as you reflect the stage lights around the room with the Les Paul New Century. All the glam flash youll ever need; backed up with real Les Paul muscle. Les Paul Special New Century main features include: Full-body mirror pickguard Mirror headstock Mahogany body and neck profile Classic 60s neck Hardware - Plating Finish: Chrome, Tailpiece: Stopbar, Bridge: Tune-o-matic, Knobs: Black Chrome inserts, Tuners: Gibson Deluxe 490R & 498T humbuckers
Advantages: Excellent tone, playability and value - for a Gibson Disadvantages: Does not have the punch of humbuckers
...There are several versions of the LP Special. The older models have P90 pickups, some have single cutaway, some have double cutaways. The reissue models have P100 pickups, or humbuckers, like the guitar pictured. Since the one I own has P100 pickups, I do not know about the guitar in the picture!
The P90 and P100 pickups look the same, but the P100 is a humbucking design, while the P90 is single coil. Sometimes these are called "soapbar" pickups, especially if they have cream covers - they have cream or black covers, depending on the guitar they are fitted on - usually black on a LP Special.
I learned to play electric guitar on a 56 LP with P90s, so I am in a position to compare my modern guitar with the old ones.
My LP Special is a cherry red 1996 model. The finish is good, it is a versatile guitar, and it plays easily. The P100...

Advantages: Sound, image, built to last Disadvantages: Some may find it a bit heavy
...An Introduction
About a month ago I decided that it was time I purchased a new electric guitar. My faithful 1988 GibsonLesPaul has served me well for the last 9 years and is still going strong. The thing is though it’s now starting to increase in value and become a nice little investment so it could do with spending a bit less time on a beer soaked stage around clumsy band members and other musicians (including myself)!
So a new guitar then, but what make should I get? A metal pointy thrash machine like an Ibanez? Nah! Not my style and they look so flimsy that they’d last five minutes! A Paul Reed Smith? Nah! Lovely guitars but I’m not paying nearly three grand for the privilege! So then, something that is built to last, classy and not way too expensive? Only one choice then, another GibsonLesPaul! Actually I...

Advantages: A good buy if you are thinking of buying a Les Paul guitar Disadvantages: Other guitars offer better value for money
...in the finish, and it does seem to "chip" easily., rather than "dent" like the old nitrocellulose laquer. There may be problems in the future - but it may just be this guitar. I have a LP Special of similar age (cherry) which has dents rather than chips!
To sum up -
Looks good, plays acceptably, very versatile tonally for a wide range of Gibson style sounds. No major issues. Balances well when played standing - better than most LP models.
Compared to the Epiphone version, has enough "mojo factor" to justify its purchase (all the Epis I tried were a bit sloppy, one way or the other).
If you want a LesPaul, this is a good buy.
If you are looking for a versatile guitar with an amazing tonal range that plays well and doesn't cost the earth, my other "work" guitar is a Fender Nashville Telecaster. I feel the Fender offers better value...

The special two is a slightly limited guitar but that's not to say that it's entirely useless. It delivers crunchy, low end sounds perfectly well and so is the perfect guitar for someone interested in producing grungy, muddy music. It is also a... more
I bought this guitar about a year ago now and it has become much loved by me. When I saw it in the guitar shop, I was just stunned by how beautiful it looked for the price. A little test drive was enough to confirm to me that it is what I was looking... more
Say hello to my new baby! I first saw this in the window of a guitar shop in Bath and knew I just had to have one. Unfortunately, the £750 price tag and the fact my wife was giving me the evil eye put a dampener on things at the time.
