A few months ago when I was in need of some razor blades I purchased the Gillette Fusion razor kit in ASDA, it was on special offer of £4……I think. In the kit came a 75ml canister of Gillette Hydro Gel. It is in an unmistakable aerosol, being that the words Gillette Fusion are emblazoned across the front of the very bright orange aerosol. Underneath this and in smaller lettering are the words Hydro Gel.
So what is a hydro gel, well it is supposed to help stop moisture escape from the skin during the sometimes quite sensitive operation of shaving. Since I have neither the inclination nor the equipment to verify the claims, I’m going to be a nice kind of guy and accept them as read. Having made this kind gesture however I would like to express that in my use of this product I have found that the texture and general feeling I get once I have applied a little on my fingertips is that of a quality product.
It feels very soft and once applied to the face with a little water the nice blue gel generates fine smooth foam. Not being Einstein or Hawkins my uneducated guess is that the generation of Oxygen during this process is one reason that the moisture however small is somehow retained in the skin. The retention of the moisture, which consists of some natural oils, is essential to the well being of the skin. The removal of these during shaving would cause some quite painful irritation is some shavers, and some may even suffer more serious consequences.
As I applied the now foam to my face I could feel the cool smoothness, it almost felt like it was actually a moisturiser. The first stroke of the razor whilst shaving is often the most painful, especially if the razor blade is not new. This is particularly more evident is those such as myself who do NOT shave on a daily basis. This means that the facial hair is longer and if the blade is not quite as sharp as it could be then a little tugging is going to occur. I making this sound like some kind of torture when I’m actually trying to make this excellent product sound as well as it is. As the razor glided effortlessly along the contours of my face I was expecting the usual little tug, the glide continued and as I realised that I had reached the end of the first stroke I also became aware than no tugging and no sensation of having shaved.
Future strokes were not quite as smooth but that was mainly my poor shaving techniques. As the razor was gliding across my face I was getting a very strong whiff of the fragranced Hydro Gel. Maybe I was bursting these oxygen bubbles and releasing the very manly but fresh scent. Or perhaps the scent was just there in the normal fashion i.e. infused in the gel.
As I briefly mentioned I’m no scientist and I cannot for sure explain the science behind this product but compared to normal foam based shaving cream it is without doubt far better. The actual shave was smoother and the rash I sometimes get when shaving was not evident. Those oxygen bubbles again I’m guessing. I did get this in a kit but it is available in the 75ml size for around £1.79 in ASDA. That is considerably more expensive than most comparable products, but I do consider the extra expense to be warranted. Even if there turns out to be none of those oxygen bubbles I’m sticking to my belief that it is they who make the product work, in conjunction of course with all the other magic ingredients which help create them.
Advantages: Smooth, creamy and it works! Disadvantages: Too expensive unless on offer

=== Modern man ===I like to pamper myself, and like to try new products particular in the _facials_ department. When I saw the Fusion range from Gillette I was immediately hooked and had to give it a go...
I\'ve tried the Fusion Razors which are impressive, not being a _foam_ type of guy I thought that I would give the Shaving Gel a try. Packaged in a metallic orange tin it is immediately eye-catching as you trolley ... ...'''£3.99 for 200ml''' it was 4 times more expensive than my normal supermarket brand.
'''Happily I notice that it is available at Boots as I write this review for £1.99.'''
=== Luxuriant ===The blue gel eases from the spout as you depress the dispenser, immediately you notice the thick luxuriant texture and smoothness as you palm the dollop between your hands. Mmmm... that smells nice! The aloe really does the trick, smelling fresh and rich without ...

...Step 1 of the new Gillette Fusion 'shaving system' and has been giving it a try .... with very impressive results. There are three different types of this gel - for Sensitive Skin, Tough Beard and Ultra Protection. We had the sensitive skin version to try. All three come packaged in a bright orange pump dispenser can and retail in the shops at £3.99.
All three products contain aloe, and on dispensing a small amount, that is the first scent you smell. ... ...a smooth foam very quickly and spreads very well, so you don't need to use a large amount. The aloe scent soon dissipates into a much more subtle 'soapy' scent, with slight 'aftershave' type undertones - it is actually a very pleasant smell.
And it does what it says on the tin! My husband says it made for a very smooth shave with no problems at all. The razor glides very smoothly and there was no trace of any rash or 'nicks' afterwards. Overall, ...

THE SHAVE
I used this with GilletteGel Sensitive Skin as the lubricating agent for my face, which I find pretty effective stuff. Actually any GilletteGel would have been just as good if you ask me. The fancy schmancy FusionHydraGel is dropping in price so that's probably good too. Wilkinson Sword have their own range of gels and foams as well as the old fashioned brush and soap, but I'll stick to what works thanks very much.
I am a bit of a lazy shaver these days and shave every 3 or 4 days. I'd do it even more infrequently but I find that the blades can't handle any longer, which usually ...
