It was perhaps the bright attractive bronze packaging that first attracted me to the Gillette Fusion, that along with the fact that ASDA had the Razor and The hydro gel on offer for £4. Since the outlay for replacement blades for three blade and Quattro type razors is usually in that vicinity I thought what the heck I'll give it a try.
The difference between the Fusion and normal four blade systems is the addition of a fifth blade which is situated on the top of the razor and is isolated from the other four. The idea behind this is that for areas such as above the moustache , a single blade is far more suitable and can negotiate the small area better and more comfortably than the quite wide width of the four blade section. This is definitely an advantage over a normal multi bladed system. The inclusion of the rather gimmicky vibration system may in certain circumstances enhance the experience, and perhaps even the quality of the actual shave, but for me it is really not much more than a gimmick. Having a beard means that I do not shave as often as most men out there may, it also means that due to this my skin does tend to be a bit more sensitive, the vibration system does seem to relieve some of the very uncomfortable moments one can have whilst shaving for the first time in a while. The vibro system is easily switched off and on by a snazzy little orange/bronze button situated half way down the shaft of the razor. It is powered by an AAA battery which in normal use is going to last quite a long time, after all most shavers are not going to continually have the vibro in operation.
The razor have a decent sized shaft with easy grip which means that should your hands be very wet the chance of the razor slipping is greatly reduced. The razor is off the same typical colour as the packaging which is a rather cool bronze colour, which gives an overall impression of quality for some strange reason. The overall looks are actually quite impressive, which is more than I can say about the overall performance. If it hadn't been on special offer, and I had had to cough up the almost £10 for a Fusion system with spare blades, I would most certainly be less impressed.
At the end of the day the advertising and production of this razor have hyped it up to be something it really isn't. Gillette's phrase in their advertising, "says the best a man can get" and at one time there might well have been a decent amount of truth in the statement, but as for the Fusion it does not match the hype and if looks were removed from the appraisal it's really just an ordinary four blade razor with an additional styling blade. Replacement blades for one of these are way in the £8- £10 bracket in places which makes it far cheaper to try out another razor rather than purchase replacement blades.
It's a nice looking practical razor that was a good buy for £4, but once the blade has served it's purpose, I'll be checking out something else next time.

A nice review with a brilliant title but with an error...the Fusion has 5 blades on the front (the "shaving surface") with a 6th blade on the top positioned away from the others. Since the numbers are prominent in your review I thought this mught help.

I bought the standard fusion having bought the fusion power previously, and it is agreed that it is awkward for the moustache area, though on the beard section it is unbeatable in my view. Though i did have better results with the standard fusion razor.
