Having gone through almost every single shaving system known to man, from both the two main wet shaving system manufacturers, to dry fully electrical systems i eagerly anticipated the launch of the new Gillette Fusion. Upon its launch i set out to buy one and was immediately impressed by the overall boldness of the packaging. If the Mach 3 packaging was sleek and understated then this was certainly going to catch the eye. And I must say I found it in an interesting and not an unwelcome change.
I went home and put it my bathroom ready to use the next morning.
Finally...daybreak...time for the razor to deal with my 5 day old beard. I still had Nivea shaving gel and i proceeded to lather up and prepare with that. Upon switching on the razor i found that the "mico pulses" were initially strange to feel and were tighter and more intense than those of M3 power. I pondered on this as I started. Now Im always clean shaven. I dont have a moustache or anything like that. I personally prefer the clean look so I was curious to see how i would use the precision trimmer...
Any way I started on the sides of my face and was pleasantly suprised. The pulses and vibrations DID make the shave more comfortable as there was considerably less drag on my face than with a purely manual razor. It meant that I could shave faster and not even suffer a single nick or cut and still turn out a great shave. Though I doubt they made the shave closer in any way when compared to the manual version Fusion.
When it came to sculpting my side burns (about ear length) I found that I could shape them without needing to use the precision trimmer at all. Where I did find the trimmer useful though was the area between the ear lobe and the side burn. just to keep it all even. The trimmer did tend to clog though and proved difficult to rinse out completely though it is a useful feature that could do with refinement. That being said the 5 blades didnt clog at all (I rinse my razor regularly during my shave) and they lasted a reasonable peroid of time though I found that as the blade dulled I still didnt get nicks but shaving would take longer because of having to repeat spots.
I cannot overstress the importance of having a good quality shaving gel or oil when shaving. Pick one that matches your skin type ie: sensitive skin, dry skin or oily skin. In my opinion foam is next to useless now and can really hamper the performance of a razor as well as increase the chance of irritation. When buying shaving oil do invest in a quality product. You do get what you pay for and if you go cheap on these things, its likely you will end up with a bad shave. which brings me to the issue of price.
The Fusion shaving system isnt cheap. There are more affordable razors out there which come close to the performance of this razor. However in terms of comfort during shaving and the experience of shaving itself I cannot fault it. I recommend it to people who want the best and are prepared to pay for it. Which means getting this razor AND a suitable gel or oil. I dont recommend Gillettes shaving products which compliment this Razor. I find they dont protect your skin adequately and can leave it feeling dry which then worsens your next shave or they dont provide enough protection so you end up with irritation afterwards. For someone wanting to make this razor a git for someone, do so knowing that you are creating a gift pack. Get other top line products in there. Gillette make fantastic razors. Be careful with their other products. Then again its all about preference and you may have yours.
I think that personally the Fusion is "the best a man can get"
