Shaving is one of the classic school boy dreams which turns into an adults nightmare! This was the one myth that really haunts us lads – shaving is not cool.

I remember at school the rumours going round:
"Oi, did you 'ere that spotty Patterson has started shaving"
"No - he can't have?!"
"We'll I reckon I'm going to have to soon if he has" (you know, just so wishing you were)

- yeah, yeah - perhaps it was the boy's version of starting your period? Knowing what I know now I would have given spotty Paterson the thumbs up rather than the cold shoulder for being that 'more mature than me'. The fact is I HATE SHAVING!!!

However, the reality is that I have no choice in the matter, meeting clients with a twelve o’clock shadow might not the give that first impression I try to achieve.

Enter the Gillette Mach 3. This was the first proper razor I got. Before this I used my fathers then a mixture of rubbish xmas presents - remember you didn't shave half as much in them days.

First off this razor is stylish, well, as stylish as a razor can be. The packaging is excellent and is an extension of the established and trusted Gillette brand. The razor itself is even more classy. It's designed to be ergonomically sound and gives off a sort of confidence even before you start the shave.

The Mach 3 is renowned for it's triple blade and definitely gives a closer shave. The lubricating strip works and the end result is a smooth, clean look with no skin irritation at all.

The one negative factor is the cost. The razor comes with two blades and is often on special offers for around £5, about the same amount as you'll have to stump out for your next box of four blades.

The crazy thing is that I didn't realise how good it was until my other half (on another of her economy drives) brought home an Asda one. Now if you've read some of my earlier op's you'll know that she we have this un-agreed agreement (that means she decided it and I nodded whilst watching football) that anything she buy's I have to try and if I genuinely don't like it then I don't have to use it.

I didn't actually mind, and the next day set myself as usual for a shave. Rinse face, shaving gel on, razor stroke, stroke, stroke...hold on, it wasn't actually doing much. In fact I'd say I had to go across each area three or four times more than with the Mach 3. And that's when it dawned on me...I'd been taking the poor bugger for granted.

I tried everything to win him back, flowers, chocolate, serenading, but all to no avail. However three years on me and mach are still going strong, I realise that all he needs is commitment and he gives me that clean look I desire - a match made in heaven.

I recommend strongly that you try the Mach 3 because although it's costly the blades do tend to last longer as you don't have to use them so much on every shave. I also see that a new Mach Turbo has been brought out but I'm not sure I could let the old fellow down again.

To be honest this relationship has been built on commitment stemming from my affair with a lesser brand with made me realise I'd been taking it for granted. Unfortunately my girlfriend wouldn't let me sleep with the blonde four doors away to see if it would have the same benefit on our relationship ;-)
