After a recent incident with one of hubby’s disposable razors which has left an inch long scar on my leg, I went to our local chemist and bought a gift pack of the Venus and ... ...recommend this to any woman out there who is still searching for the ideal solution to the problem of hairy legs. Hopefully, one day, we won’t feel forced to shave at all, but until that day, I’m happy to spend my pounds on Gillette Venus.
Yes, I am naked while writing this. Previously, I was all hairy and horrible, but now I am perfectly smooth. What am I talking about? My legs, of course!
For some reason, someone somewhere once decided that women’s legs should always be free of hair. I don’t know who this was, but I’d like to hit him. (Let’s face it, it’s bound to be a man!) This chore has caused me countless hours of irritation and pain over the years, as I have had to balance this with a desire for social acceptance and wanting to conform.
I usually wear trousers, so my legs are rarely on display anyway. But in the summer, when it’s just toooo hot and the shorts have to come out, I have to de-fuzz my legs more often than usual.
I found the epilators are too painful to bear and although I did use the Epil-Ya waxing system for a while, it wasn’t perfect and was too expensive to continue with long term. The creams aren’t very effective, so it had to be the old method of shaving.
I have tried many combinations of razors and creams, foams and gels. Each one left me with bad cuts or long painful grazes. Each time after shaving, I would face an almost sleepless night as my legs burned. In the morning, the grazes would be livid and ironically, I would have to wear trousers to hide the ungainly marks.
I then read a review of the Gillette Venus razor and invested in one of them. I discovered I still hurt my legs if I used it with various products, until I finally hit upon the perfect combination – Gillette Venus razor with Gillette Satin Care Shave Gel.
After a recent incident with one of hubby’s disposable razors which has left an inch long scar on my leg, I went to our local chemist and bought a gift pack of the Venus and the Satin Care for £5.49. As I use them together, I decided to review both in one opinion.
The razor comes in a bright blue or a neon pink. I first bought a blue one then the adverts came on TV about the pink one and my husband was incredulous that anyone would buy it, just because of the colour. Then I watched the advert with my two eldest daughters and we were all raving about the wonderful pink colour! Sometimes men just can’t understand us ;-)
So I got the pink one this time and – it has to be said – it is a beautiful vibrant shocking pink! The razor itself is sturdy with a contoured handle making it easy to grip, even with wet hands. The top of the razor is flexible and bends with the lines of your body. The blades have cushioned sections above and below them, so they are soft on the skin, while the blades are sharp enough to do their job well.
Each pack comes with a plastic casing to keep it in and a holder, which sticks to the wall. I don’t tend to use this though, as my eldest daughter will use the razor too much! So I keep it in my bedroom.
You get a free razor blade with the pack too. It is easy to tell when the blades need replacing, as there is a blue strip along the top, which fades with use. I found it simple to take the old blade off, as you press the plastic bit and it pings off! (This was so much fun, I did it twice!!) I had problems fitting the new one on though and eventually resorted to the Baby Spice look and asking hubby to do it!
I have used two different kinds of the Satin Care shave gel. The one that came with the pink razor is the Floral Passion one, also in a matching pink canister with a bright blue top. The gel itself is also a pretty pink, which foams quickly. You only need a small squirt of the gel to have enough foam to shave a leg.
The gel smells lightly floral and is definitely a girlie fragrance, but it isn’t too strong or over-powering at all. It is a pleasant smell and one that lingers slightly afterwards.
After shaving my legs with the Venus and Satin Care gel, I am always pleased with the final results. Almost all of the hairs were removed on the first go and I usually manage not to cut my legs at all, although I sometimes cut my knees with the razor!
My legs are silky, soft and smooth with no bristly, stubbly bits. So – result! You can, of course, use the Venus on other parts of your body, but I thought I’d just concentrate on the legs in this opinion!
I am very happy with both the razor and the shave gel and intend to continue to use them in the future. Although the initial outlay is quite a lot, I believe the expense is worthwhile as the razor is a high quality product and it does what you want it to do.
The Satin Care gel lasts a long time as you only have to use a small amount and each razor cartridge lasts around a month, I find, depending on how often you use it. You can also purchase the replacement razor blade cartridges separately or in packs of four with a new razor.
Overall, I would recommend this to any woman out there who is still searching for the ideal solution to the problem of hairy legs. Hopefully, one day, we won’t feel forced to shave at all, but until that day, I’m happy to spend my pounds on Gillette Venus.
Advantages: Lasts ages, triple blades give a closer shave Disadvantages: Initial price, price of blades
I have had my Gillette Venus mark 1 for 6 years now so I thought it would be about time it got one of my reviews here on Ciao.
I bought this when it first came out in 2000 or thereabouts, I had been an electric razor fan unti then and inicdentially at the time, my ladyshave was becoming a bit useless. So when this w\s on special offer at £5.99 from £8.99, I decided to try it.

...giving a try. Gillette for Women Venus Razor, to give it its full title, costs around £5.49. It comes in an almost impenetrable tough plastic casing, which I had to carve into with a knife. Inside I found the azure blue razor resting on a plastic shaving compact in which spare blades can be stored. The razor itself is long and narrow with a rubberised handle and handling it took a while to get used to, but I have now grown to like the feel of it. ... ...money. I am sure that it is no accident that Gillette named this razor after the Roman goddess of beauty as part of their marketing strategy, I for one have been converted. All rogue BIC razors kicking around my bathroom were consigned to the bin long ago. ...

Advantages: Smooth finish, no nicks Disadvantages: More expensive than rivals
My first experience of shaving my legs was not a nice memory. My mum had told me not to shave as I would regret it, but as usual I knew better. I was having a bath and decided to borrow her cheap disposable razor, and proceeded to take the skin (and some flesh) off my leg from ankle to knee! I steered clear of razors pretty much since then (I was not like a werewolf though..I just waxed!), but when I had my daughter I found that time and money would ... ...I discovered this product, and since then I have been silky smooth, and hair free, which anyone with dark hair will agree is a nightmare task as a lot of razors shave the hairs but then still make your legs look bumpy and stubbly...or maybe that was just me. I bought the razor from my local Boots for 4.89, and it came in a pack with a plastic storage casem, which comes complete with 3 spare blades, which are stored in water tight packs to make sure ...

...new stuff. Well the gillette venus razor has been out for a while now and I've debated whether or not I should give it a try (I have had the gillette for women excel razor for ages now). I've seen it in the shops and ummed and arred if I should buy it. I've actually put off purchasing it due to the fact that it is quite pricey. So, after reading a review on Ciao! earlier this morning on the Venus (which came highly reccommended) I gave in and popped ... ...clear plastic case with 'New Gillette for women Venus' wtitten accross the front. Inside the case theres a little infomation leaflet which basically just tells you about the other products in the gillette range (shaving gels and refils). It also shows you how to change blades correctly and how to attach the razor storage case to the wall of your bathroom! Good idea but I won't personally be sticking it to the tiles of our newly done out shower!

Advantages: Smooth finish, nice colours, well wrapped replacement blades, decent price Disadvantages: No safety cap on head for travel
Gillette Venus is one of those products that I keep coming back to becasue it does the job it is supposed to do and does it well.
The razor I bought and still have is about 6 years old, it is the classic blue one, though you can also get the same style in shocking pink which does look really cool. Either way you get the same razor design.
A thing I particularly like though nothing to do with the razoring itself is the case that comes with a sticky ... ...get coloured shaving gel by gillette too especially for women, to match the venus razor (in pink as well I believe), which works well although you can get the same effect with any shaving gel. The use of a gel is of course highly recommended as it makes the shave much smoother, closer and safer.
The razor itself comes initially with a spare couple of blades, mine costs £5.59, and the replacement cartridges come in packs of 2, 4, 8 or 16 I believe. ...

Advantages: Attractive packaging, lush tropical scent Disadvantages: Shave gel bars dont last long, not a close enough shave
going back to using the original GilletteVenus blades as these are far less cheaper than this and i dont care if i have to buy shaving gel...at least this can last for months!!!
Very disappointed!!! ...
Advantages: smells nice Disadvantages: gels bars snapped off
I have had a bad experience with this. On the first time i used it the gillettevenus breeze, theshaving gel bars both fell off, and the second time i used it the handle snapped in half. I have always used gillette razors and never had any trouble before.
On the positive side, it smells lovely, and also after phoning gillette and telling them of this experience they have sent me a voucher to replace the broken razor and were very friendly and helpful.
On reflection, i would not buy the gillettevenus breeze razor again, but would stick to the gillettevenus vibrence. My sister also had the same trouble with the gel bars falling off after the razor being used a few times, she is also going back to the venus vibrance. ...
Advantages: Easy, quick, very close shave, takes longer for hairs to grow back, no cutting or nicking Disadvantages: Replacement blades a bit pricey
Hairy legs just aren't attractive. No matter how much some of these 'new women' protest that it's natural and demand that we all bin wax, razors, depilatory creams, etc - it's just not going to happen!
- Waxing: too painful, too expensive
- Depilatory creams: Time-consuming, smelly
- Sugaring: I'd rather eat it
- Epilators: Only for the very stupid or very brave
So you can see, the best option for me is a razor! Before I bought the Venus, I had trundled along using rubbish disposable razors which gave me painful nicks and were generally rubbish quality.
This might seem quite expensive, initially, at £5 for the razor and more for replacement blades, but trust me, it's an investment, and the best £5 you'll ever spend! If you're very conscious of how things look, the Venus, as well as blue, comes in pink and a limited ...
