Advantages: A funny, well-written and gripping story Disadvantages: Mums might find it harrowing even if their children don't!
...and relives buried memories. There are many surprises and some memorable characters like Gina, juvenile delinquent turned social worker, and the irrepressible Tanya whom fans will remember from Wilson's earlier title 'Bad Girls'.
The author has an extraordinary ability to connect with children and convey a world seen through young eyes. Her distinctive first person style, always written in the present tense, gives her protagonist a real character and makes the reader share her feelings.
With themes including abuse, neglect, cruelty and suicide, this may seem like strong stuff to give to children. But chances are they will take it in their stride and parents will be the ones most affected by April's unhappy past.
