Below par Trollope should have stuck with the Aga Sagas

Advantages: Well researched, well written
Disadvantages: Plot heavy-handed, central characters unengaging

Joanna Trollope is a phenomenally successful writer best known for her Aga Sagas about middle-class life in rural England. In this one, she leaves her usual territory to tell the tale of Southern belle Gillon, who moves to London for a spell, becoming embroiled with friend Tilly and her boyfriend Henry
Trollope's novels are usually page-turners but this one is slow to start and gives the impression that the author is writing by numbers instead ...
...with.
Maybe she was bored with covering the same ground but maybe she should have followed the dictum of Jane Austen that it's best to stay with what you know and feel emotionally attached to.
Its central failure is that Gillon is a pretty unsympathetic, selfish kind of character who doesn't really engage the reader. Because Trollope is such an accomplished writer it is not without redeeming features and life across the Atlantic, Charleston ... more
