Sexy Saudis

Advantages: Saudi chick lit with a difference
Disadvantages: I can't read Arabic.

...Saudi women, though, the four girls belong to the so-called ‘velvet’ class, i.e., the wealthy high society. I don’t accuse the author of leaving out the other strata, however, her subject is the influence of the world outside on the closed Saudi society, what consequences it has when young people get to know that different forms of life are possible but have no chance to try them out for themselves. Although TV programmes from more liberal countries ...
...more interesting is what the girls experience in the rigid Saudi society, some incidents take my breath away.

On the one hand women are encouraged to get a good education, even to study abroad, but on the other hand they’re treated as if they weren’t certifiably sane or grown up and capable of thinking for themselves. Overbearing parents and society at large following the ancient laws of tribes and traditions regulate everything. Once ... more

...was direct. I learned from Girls of Riyadh that the closest thing to 'normal' would have been for his uncle to contact my father and negotiations to follow. Mind you, no relative in their right mind would ever have approved me as a bride to a well-off Saudi of good family. By Saudi standards chatting over dinner meant we were practically living together. Hell's teeth, he'd seen my hair and probably a few inches of skin. ==Enough of all that - now ...
...of four well-off, relatively sophisticated girls living in Riyadh who have - as it the habit in chick lit - plenty of problems with men. Take all the problems of a Euro chick-lit, remove all the freedoms we take for granted, add a large dollop of family pressure to marry and stir them all up. It's not as if you can date for a while, see how it goes, discuss your future with your boyfriend, move in together, have a kid or two and maybe book a date ...

Girls of Riyadh, the truth

Advantages: Easy language, Insightful, addictive
Disadvantages: there isn't a sequel yet

The Girls of Riyadh, where should I begin? Riyadh is the capital of Saudi Arabia. For those who may be unfamiliar with the country, Saudi is a nation located in the Arabian Peninsula and has captured the attention of the media due to its theocratic government. Although there are several misconceptions regarding Saudi Arabia, it can be affirmed that there is a large difference in permissibility within society when contrasted with the United Kingdom. ...
...book about the reality of girls in Saudi Arabia. Her book was banned from Saudi Arabia, which only contributed to its popularity and demand for "bootlegged" copies. As was mentioned before, censorship prevails in Saudi Arabia and, therefore, like many other Arabian bestsellers, the novel was published in the Lebanese capital, Beirut. The admirable courage of the author drew my interest to this novel and as soon as I began reading, I was captured ...
