First impressions

Over the past few years I have owned a number of different cycling helmets. Finding the right one for your needs can be difficult, with looks, cost, comfort and safety all to consider. Accessories are often changed with the purchase of a new bike, and if new clothing is bought then you naturally look to buy accessories to match. Lots of people fancy trying a new helmet from time to time, and I fancied a change when I bought the Giro Hex hemlet.

The Giro Hex helmet is quite similar to many other helmets in the Giro range, and that is that we have a skeletal design, perfect for warm days. Although warm days are infrequent in the UK, I am sure I am not the only one to get hot under the collar from a long ride. The beauty of the Giro helmet range is that each of the designs come in a wide range of colours. I often take a fancy to the brighter designs, but on this occasion I opted for a rather plain black helmet.

In terms of looks, the Giro brand has a reputation for bold design. They have a great attitude towards styling and also safety, and this combination is a winner as far as their sales figures are concerned. Each model in their range is slightly different, but they are all tough and offer a similar level of protection against any impact.

My experience

These intricate designs may not suit everyone, but I love them. They are great for summer riding as they allow air to run through your hair, though in the winter you might not appreciate this. These lightweight helmets are very popular, and most helmets these days that are designed for cycling are similar to this one.

Comfort is obviously a key consideration, and although the helmet appears to have lots of open areas, the padding between the helmet and your head is very generous indeed. The thick padding doesn’t make you feel too warm, but it does prevent the helmet from rubbing on your skin, and you will be most grateful for it. I am aware of the helmets with detachable pads for comfort, but this one is a lining that is specially designed for this helmet.

The looks speak for themselves, and you will be able to form your own opinion on what you think of the look of the helmet. Consider the wide range of colours, but also the lightweight design that has your best interests at heart – safety.

On longer journeys I would say that a lightweight helmet is essential. The last thing you want is a heavy weight on your head, causing you back and neck ache. The bumpy ride of a bike can be harsh enough, so anything to comfort you is most welcome.

Price and availability

Expect to pay around £65 for the Giro Hex helmet. This may seem a lot of money, but can you put a price on safety? There are a number of past versions of the Hex model, and these are priced accordingly. The latest model will obviously cost more than a 2013 design, for example. I would advise against buying a secondhand helmet for a couple of reasons. Firstly you are never going to be 100% certain that it is a genuine item, and you could also find it hard to tell if the helmet has suffered damage from an impact that may not be instantly noticed on a visual inspection.

Final thoughts

This is a good quality helmet, and it is up to the modern standards in terms of safety and also style. This is the design you would go for if you specifically wanted a summer helmet, and the Giro brand is very well-known when it comes to safety cycle wear.

I can only give this helmet a positive review, and as I have used a number of their helmets over the years, this just goes to show how much I trust the quality. The design is a huge selling point, and it is all about choosing the right design to suit both your needs and what you are looking for in a helmet in terms of looks.

always seem to be on catch-up and short of Es as a result these days. SUper review and I agree re price - a potential life- or at least serious injury saver!
