Definitely the book of the film rather than the other way round, Gram Dewey has produced a workmanlike book which adds very little from the film. This is a shame because here was an opportunity to fill in some gaps in the screenplay. It was also a chance to give some historical background to the life and times of the Roman Empire. If you like collecting film scripts then this is the book for you, as it quotes word for word from the film. Despite these limitations, and having seen the film about ten times, I enjoyed this book. Gram Dewey has an easy fluid style and the book is fast paced and never boring. It is also a fairly short book, some chapters only take half a page, and if your a quick reader you could probably read it in a few hours.
