Glamour is mainly concerned with Fashion, (with the all important capital "F") The articles tend to be of the "early twenties" type, with a bit of an older slant - September 2004's issue features such gems as "The Secret World of Posh Swingers parties" and "I took my husbands prostitute to lunch", which do seem to come under the catagory of things I should be aware of. The sex articles ... ...of room for "Mingers". When Glamour get this wrong it can be quite spectacular though - a recent blooper consisted of an article about Posh and Becks delightful marriage, published about two weeks after the Rebecca Loo's thing kicked off. I'm sure it was a matter of bad timing, as the magazine had probably gone to be printed well before the story broke, but there must have been some blushes on the editors face for the next few days. more
As well as stuff from Boots, and new shoes, my only other major indulgence is a stack of magazines each month. A couple of Christmas' ago, hubby was a bit stuck looking for little presents, but remembered that I used to have trouble finding this in the local shops, and thoughtfully bought me a subscription. Every month, a copy popped through the letterbox, saving me the hunting time I would otherwise have used.
Now, in women's magazine land, there's a plethora of genres. There's where you normally start (J17, Mizz) then the ones for the late teens-early twenties (More, Cosmo, New Woman etc) and the ones for the more responsible among us (the likes of She, Eve and Red - these normally have stuff about kids and homes/cooking) I've not grown into the next group yet (People's Friend, Woman & Home etc) Finally there's the "specialists" - wedding and decorating mags - and the cross genre's with a bit of everything - such as Glamour.
I would put myself firmly in the middle of the early twenties mags, and the more grown up ones. As a happily married lady, I have no need or desire to know about how not to catch an STD, how not to get pregnant and how to chat up a guy. However, I'm not a mother, so a lot of the kids stuff in the older magazines don't do a lot for me - although I have learnt some stuff from them.

The sex articles are in the main about not getting caught out in the dating arena, although there are sometimes some good tips to be had.
There's a healty dose of celebrity though - what they wore, what they should never have worn, and the requisite amount of "intimate" interviewing. This month, for example, Jerry Hall discusses life with Mick, and Charlize Theron is going on about her tragic past and the Oscars. Gorgeousness certainly guarentees coverage in this magazine - there's not a lot of room for "Mingers". When Glamour get this wrong it can be quite spectacular though - a recent blooper consisted of an article about Posh and Becks delightful marriage, published about two weeks after the Rebecca Loo's thing kicked off. The magazine is owned by the giant American publisher's, Conde Nast. This does, unfortunately result in an overoccupation with all things USA in the "serious" articles - especially 9/11. It seems like every month there's a new tale of woe to be heard. If it's not that, then it's the war in Iraq. I tend to gloss over these articles now - I think I'm suffering from terrorist / weapons fatigue! The articles on womens situation in places like Afganistan are a lot more interesting reading in my opinion.
The journalism is normally fair, but the magazine doesn't shy away from giving a good slating to someone or something they don't like. I think this can be more driven by internal politics than genuine dislike of a person - I read an article the other month about Paris Hilton, and it was pure vitriol. I felt quite uncomfortable reading it, and I came away unsure whether it was the journalist herself, or Conde Nast that disliked her so vehemently.
On to the main attraction then - the Fashion. Really, I buy this magazine for the pictures. I like to look at the latest little bit of polyester from one of the big designers and marvel over people being prepared to pay for them, while being shown a more wearable, and much cheaper high street version. Sometimes, I do think a lot of the Fashion looks ridiculous - I wouldn't dress that way for a fancy dress party! However, sometimes I like to buy into a trend in a small way, and this is the ideal place to find out how. Couple this with regular discount vouchers for my favourite stores (in September, it's Glamour week, so loads of discounts to be had at Warehouse, Oasis, New Look and loads of others) and I find the mag to be well worth the £1.90 cover price (even if I did have to buy my own!!) Really it's spectacular value, when Vogue and In Style have about the same amount of content for well over £3. Needless to say, it's chock full of ads for stuff that I could never afford, but at 352 pages, there's plenty of room for them
As well as this, there's up to date hair and beauty pages - always good for planning my next Boots raid, and some good lifestyle pages. And it fit's in my handbag. What more could a girl ask for?
Advantages: hanbag-size, good freebies, good beauty writing Disadvantages: too much promotion and 'bought-in' features from US magazines
When Glamour first hit the shelves (with Kate Winslet on the cover) I loved it. It was small enough to fit into my bag, had a good fashion section with a nice mix of clothes I coveted but couldn't afford, and cheap versions I could try myself. It had the celebrities I loved and pretty great beauty writing. The only thing it lacked that I like to see was decent lifestyle features, but this was never a magazine that was big on journalism. There was ... ...all-in-all this is a glitter, glamour and shopping magazine for people who like to dip in and out without taxing their brains too much. Which is fine, to a point.
However, there's only so long we can stare at pretty pictures of the same lipgloss we were being sold this time last year. Because I'm a fashion journalism student, magazines are pretty much my textbooks, and I buy a LOT each month. I only have subscriptions to two, but I can safely say ...

...Born in the USA, Glamour (published by Condé Nast) was first issued here in Blighty in the first quarter of 2001 and by the 15th August, 2002 (i.e. right about now) officially became the UK and Europe's best-selling women's monthly glossy. Sales have increased by almost 22% since launch enabling a monthly circulation of 520,193. That’s surely a lot of gloss folks!
So, in a dwindling publications market where female magazines fumble and fight ... ...To its defence, Glamour is a small A5 size magazine. It’s handy and handbag size. Female unique selling point - number one. It is also glossy and exudes the female lifestyle we often sociologically aspire to even if we admit it or not (loads of clothes, loads of money, limitless luxuries, etc.). Female unique selling point – number two. And. There. You. Have. It. In. A. Nutshell. Glamour presents 298 pages of cover-exclusive young female ...

...times to get it in! Glamour was, I believe, the first to with the A5 format and it has been this way since the magazine was first launched in the summer of 2002.
I have the October 2005 issue in front of me; this was a freebie issue that I found on a train. I will now go through it in more detail to give you a general idea of what to expect from a typical issue. The cover this month features a naked Cat Deeley, but don't get too excited boys all ... ...patients. For a fluffy magazine, Glamour does do this kind of 'Marie Claire' type of article very well. There is an interview with Guy Ritchie, this is written more like a biography with the odd quote in it than an interview, but makes reasonably good reading. This is just a selection of the articles in October's issue. There is plenty more to read and look at, including as you would expect dozens of pages of fashion and beauty. There are also plenty ...

...buying a magazine containing gossip. Glamour magazine is exactly the right balance of trash and serious so I find it great value and entertainment. As I am not the type to buy a magazine every month, I just don't think about it, my other half treated me to a subscription when we saw it on offer in the back of one. The subscription was £7 for six months of magazines, as they retail at £2.00 that is a real bargain! Not only did I get my magazines for ... ...I got my subscription to Glamour in the first place, six months of issues for £6.00 and you get a OPI manicure set free! Apparently this set sells at £29.95, worth having isn't it. All in all I love this mag and although the amount of advertising does annoy me a little I wouldn't say it was enough to put me off. ...

...noticed that the subscription to Glamour was for an amazing £9.99 for the year (12 issues), and with this you also got a free gift. The gift for the April issue was an Estee Lauder nail varnish and matching gloss worth £22, so with this added incentive I subscribed to Glamour for the next year.
Today my first delivered issue arrived - alone. There was no sight of the free gift - whether they will send it later is anybody's guess. I have emailed ... ...One month later and the Glamour magazine has shrunk to 232 pages!!! Now that's not a small difference in my eyes. What made me laugh was the price on the front cover. It so proudly reads 'Still only £1.50' - well I should hope so too. It has shrunk by over 70 pages!
The content is still good though, even though there is too much advertising for my liking but then they have to get money from somewhere i guess. For those that may be interested in ...

I think Bliss is trying to be the new Glamour, with the new size of it, which I do like with 226 pages. The new look was a while ago really, you probably saw it advertised on the TV very rubbish advert, and it is till trying to carry off that it is new when it has been the same for about 4 months!? However it is a fab price costing only £1.75; this is great value compared to other teen magazines with similar content. There is an issue out each month, usually with a free gift, and some stickers. I think Bliss is aimed at 13-17 year olds.
The cover is bright and glossy with the top articles on the front, with a famous celeb that features inside with a big story, never cover girls. Bliss is spilt up in to six main sections each month: (A brief idea so I don?t give it all away.)

between artistic and simple, some in the form of glossy surreal photoshoots more about the art than the clothes and others as layouts usually set out by a certain style or colour depending on the trends of the month. Vogue is very much inspired by the catwalk so expect to see some outfits and trends that to us simpletons would appear ludicrous but somehow these glamourous models still manage to look good in them...thank God I have enough sense to realise that I wouldn't!
Features and Articles:
There are always a variety of well written articles to read, there are real life stories of tradgedy and triumph, I found a recent article by a former cocaine addict very enlightening having known people who have used this drug, it was also positive to the extent she detailed the lowest point of her life, which was beyond something most of us could ...
