Advantages Works well, looks neat

Disadvantages It would use too much power to be in permanent use

In my previous house I had a conservatory built on the back overlooking my garden. It was lovely and, since I did not have room for a table anywhere else in the house it made an excellent dining room. The only problem was that if I wanted to cook a meal for people in the winter - Christmas being an excellent example - it was damn cold in the conservatory!

So, partly out of self preservation I think, mom and dad treated me to a Glen 2K fan heater. This was in 1995 - it worked well then and it still works well now so I thought I had better tell you about it! I can't remember how much my parents paid for the heater (let's face it I can't remember what I did yesterday half the time let alone over 10 years ago!) but I have had a look on the Internet and found the heater priced at about £15.

The heater is white and is flat in design. It stands about an inch or so off the floor and the heater itself is about four or five inches deep. It is only about a foot or so across in either direction so it looks very neat and doesn't take up much room.

The instruction booklet is written on both sides of a piece of A4 paper and is easy to read and understand.

There are two controls on the top together with the vent through which the air is blown.

The first control has four settings which are as follows:

O the heater is switched off completely - pretty self explanatory I think!
X cool blow - the fan will operate using unheated air. This is ideal for circulating cool air on a hot day.
1 the heater will provide 1KW of heat - for times when you need a lower heat setting.
2 the heater will provide 2KW of heat - for times when you need the higher heat setting.

The second control is a thermostat which is brilliant!

You just turn on the heater and turn the thermostat to its highest temperature setting. When the room has reached the temperature that you want all you have to do is turn the thermostat down until the heater just clicks off and then the heater will cut in when the temperature drops below the optimum that you have chosen. It will cut out each time that temperature is reached again.

The heater does make a noise when the fan is spinning but I don't find it too much of a problem.

There is also a frost protection feature on the heater. You just set the thermostat to the * position and it will maintain a temperature of approximately 5 degrees. I haven't actually used this feature but, since the other features of the heater have been excellent I can only assume this would be too.

I have used the heater in various rooms but as I say mainly in my conservatory which a reasonable size - we could fit an eight seater table in there even when the Christmas tree was in there as well! The room was heated to the temperature we had chosen and it remained at that temperature as the heater stopped and started automatically as I have described.

It was also nice to set it underneath the table - it kept our feet as warm as toast!

Obviously you are not supposed to use the heater in the bathroom or near water of any kind for obvious reasons!
