These days many people choose to take glucosamine sulphate - I know lots of people who take it in the hope that it will do them some good. From talking to people, I thought that it might be useful to find out how to take it. I hope you find this useful....

WHAT DOES IT DO?
Glucosamine Sulphate "helps to maintain healthy joints, tendons, muscles and ligaments" (this is the only way that manufacturers can tell you what is does according to food law). What is really meant, is that glucosamine sulphate forms part of the structure of a jelly like substance (a carbohydrate) called GAG, or glucosaminoglycan. This is the basis of how glucosamine sulphate workd. When people get wear or tear on the joints, the water inbetween the joints (the synovial fluid) can become very thin. This means that the synovial fluid offers little protection to the joints, and this is the start of processes such as inflammation, and wearing down on cartilage tissue. By keeping the synovial fluid thick, glucosamine sulphate helps the body to heal itself.

HOW MUCH SHOULD YOU TAKE?
Research studies have shown that you should take around 1500mg glucosamine sulphate daily. Some people choose to take it in three intakes of 500mg (usually as tablets).

HOW LONG SHOULD YOU TAKE IT FOR?
Nutritionists usually recommend that you take glucosamine sulphate for at least 8 weeks before you make an assessment on whether it is working or not. Glucosamine sulphate can be taken for many years - as long as you like, as long as it is suitable for you.

WHO CAN TAKE IT?
Not everyone can take glucosamine sulphate. The most obvious groups of people not to take it are a) diabetics, as glucosamine has been known to alter blood sugar balance b) people with shellfish allergy, as neary every forms of glucosamine sulphate are made from glucosamine sulphate.

IS IT EXPENSIVE?
For 90 500mg tablets, expect to pay between £5 and £10, depending on the brand. The other thing to watch out for, is that different forms of glucosamine sulphate give a different level of glucosamine. You'll probably have to contact the company to find out exactly how much glucosamine (which does the job) is in the product.

DOWN SIDES?
It can taste cak! If you don't like the taste of fish, you shouldn't suck it (not that you really should anyway, although I did know one lady who used to chew them. Ergh!)

Good op about a product that really seemed to help me. Also worth pointing out like many things it's contraindicated in pregnancy. Love the photo BTW! Cazz xx
