THE SUMMARY This is one of the best titles available on the Sony PSP. God of War: Chains of Olympus has it all battles, blood, sex, and magic and are all of a superb standard. It is almost in my experience the best looking game ever produced for the PSP.
THE STORY You play "Kratos" a General of the Spartan Army who was tormented by demons so pledged to serve the Gods of Olympus. When the Spartan city of Attica is set upon by the Persians you must defend it from the might of the Persian Army and a huge Basilisk, a beast of a creature at least 50 times bigger than Kratos. Once you have fought your way through Attica you have battled you way through some caves on your way to Hades.
Your character "Kratos" has a number of different attacks, light, heavy and grappling attacks using his fiery blades. To make the battles more exciting combinations of the attacks can be performed by pressing buttons in sequence. I found evading the enemy attacks quite hard, the problem, I found it difficult to get used to pressing both the L1 and R1 buttons along with moving the analog stick.
The gameplay in each level is fairly linear although there are a few branches along the way. One feature of the gameplay which I loved is the puzzle element although I feel their could have been more of this you have to manipulate boxes and dead bodies onto buttons or turn wheels to move elevators plus much more.
Once you have defeated the second boss you unlock the use of magic when by beating the first Persian you receive the "efreet". This artefact allows you to damage all nearby enemies when you summon a magical beast to create a ring of fire around you.
Throughout the game you collect items either from breaking barrels opening treasure chests or killing enemies. Red orbs are collected and used to learn new attacks as well as upgrading your weapons and magic. Gorgon Eyes and Phoenix Feathers are collected to allow your overall health and magic meters to be increased.
The gameplay is all free flowing and it is unlikely that you will get stuck on any area for any length of time. On the whole I found this game a little on the short side and unfortunately you are left wanting more GOW action.
The Chains of Olympus game is visually outstanding both in the cut scenes and in the actual gameplay. The game continues to impress even when the screen is full of enemies moving around and fighting. The game hardly ever stalls. The one complaint about the look of this game would be that in some scenes when the camera angle draws out your character can appear to be a little small on the PSP screen but this does not last for long.
THE SOUND The sound in this game is in one word "fantastic". The characters and the narrator are voiced extremely competently and the soundtrack comes together with the action to create an almighty alliance. It spurs you on to complete the game.
THE RATING God of War is an all encompassing console experience of a game. The look, the action and the gameplay combine to create a rip snorter of a game that will have you begging for more. 9/10
