A side-scrolling hack 'n' slash adventure, Golden Axe sees you making your way through five stages of old-skool action, hacking down beasties such as goblins with clubs, ogres, skeletons and knights. The aim of the quest is to seek out and destroy the evil foe Death Adder (shudder), who has kidnapped the King and Princess of Somewhereorother, killed half your family and even swiped the legendary Golden Axe. The dirty swine!
Fans will immediately recognise the similarities between this and Streets Of Rage - both are scrolling beat 'em ups of one kind or another, both allow to choose between two men and a woman on the character select, and both were developed by Sega themselves. This is where the similarities end however as while Streets of Rage adopted a more modern, urban feel with techno/dance music and fisticuff action, Golden Axe sticks firmly to the 'dungeons and dragons' theme.
As I mentioned, there are three characters to choose from and they are all very different. The Dwarf is the most powerful, the Barbarian a close second and the Amazon is physically the weakest of the trio. But in a cool twist, strengths are reversed when it comes to magical ability. Whilst the dwarf can only perform basic spells, the Amazonian can call upon several different elements to aid your characters, as well as an incredible fire-breathing dragon. To use these spells, you must collect the blue magic phials that are scattered about the levels - a simple tap of the A button and the action temporarily stops as your spell takes effect. Which spell you use depends on how many phials you have collected. The fire-breathing dragon is the toughest to get but can come in very handy against bosses! So it is up to the player to decide on whether they want to be physically or magically strong, although the extra strength really is needed given the onslaught of enemies you will face.
The controls, though simple (A=Magic, B=Attack, C=Jump), aren't perfect. In fact, they seem almost sluggish when compared to Streets of Rage, but for once you really won't care that much because it is mesmerising addictive - Sega have once again found the ingredients required to make you feel like you are playing an arcade game; the soundtrack is exciting, the sound effects echo with the screams of the dead and Golden Axe is immaculately presented. Stages are linked by nice, brief intermissions that don't hinder the furious pace of the action, but keep the player updated as to where they are and what is happening. Oh, and I nearly forgot the two-player co-operative, the mode that stole an entire summer of mine 6 or 7 years ago. It's worth buying Golden Axe for this section alone.
Aside from the Arcade mode, there is a nifty training game that allows you to practice on an early part of the adventure with any character before being graded on your overall competency. A nice addition all in all, as is the Duel Mode - a novel scenario that lets you and a mate battle each other to the death!
Two more little innovations in the gameplay increase Golden Axe's appeal further. Firstly, you can steal mini-dragons from enemies to ride around levels on. With these 'vehicles' manoeuvrability is increased, it has a tail-swiping attack to knock enemies of their feet and with a quick double-tap of a direction button, the dragon can also charge at the enemy. Secondly, between levels you are sat round a camp fire minding your own business, when some thieving dwarves appear and try to steal any magic phials you currently hold. Your job is to give them a right good kicking to retain your goods, but you can also gain some magic if you are quick!
Golden Axe looked pretty good in its day - animation was slick and whilst the backgrounds weren't particularly memorable, at least they were varied. Scrolling was smooth and action would continue at a very respectable speed despite the screen often containing many sprites.
It's a tougher game than many have given it credit for in the past, and I'm only slightly ashamed to say that I've never completed it (only met Death Adder once, as I recall). Nostalgia buffs will be in heaven with this game as it represents everything that was good about 16-bit video games - fast, simple, addictive and arcady all the way.
The slightly slow-controls and lack of changeable weaponry (would have been nice if you could pick up enemy spears or something along those lines) are the only things that mar this otherwise terrific game. It is a title everyone should have a chance to play and if you find it cheap, don't hesitate to buy it.
Advantages: Challenging,Great music Disadvantages: Fairly small sprites, odd enemy colours, muffled sounds
Golden Axe was one of the games released on Mega Games 2, a three in one cartridge that was packaged with the Sega Megadrive(Genesis) , along with Streets of Rage and Revenge of Shinobi, at the peak of the console's popularity.Naturally it was extremely popular.I got my Megadrive early, and never had it.So I had to put up with listening to all my friends rant about it, and sneaking the occasional go on multiplayer. That was,of course until Sega's ... ...a sandwich. Golden Axe is a Side Scrolling Fighter along similar lines to Streets of Rage and it's sequels, only while they were 'Beat' em ups, Golden Axe was a 'Slash' em up.Each character, both good and evil, was outfitted with some variety of medieval weaponry. The story is fairly simple, the evil Death Adder has taken the Royal Family Hostage, and stolen the Golden Axe.Three warriors, all with personal issues with the Adder,Ax-Battler(and yes, that ...

Advantages: good game, not bad graphics Disadvantages: could of been better if it was remade
...is about the classic game Golden Axe. I will give as much information about it as I can. This game is like streets of rage (check out my review on it) but the game is set in the olden times, where you fight monsters, stone men with clubs, dragons and all sorts.
Golden Axe is a classic game that no one will ever forget, like Sonic. I have Golden Axe on a ROM, and I play it a lot of times. In Golden Axe, you can move up and down on the area you are ... ...that has completed the game Golden Axe.
The originality of the game is great, it’s sort of like Streets of Rage, but it is set more in the 14th century or something, well probably before then, and you go around fighting you enemies, freeing hostages, and all that. The graphics are not bad, could have been better, but not much, as it’s a game that is like 10 years old, and it was on an old machine, the Mega drive. But if it was remade on the XBOX ...

Advantages: Nostalgic, fun, tense, long. Disadvantages: A teensy bit dated.
A classic nostalgic side-scrolling fantasy beat-em-up with lots of replayability value. Battle your way through barren wastes, castles and cities as one of three characters. Gillias Thunderhead - a white-haired bearded dwarf, Tryas Flare, a red-headed agile swordswoman or Ax Battler, a broadsword-wielding muscle man. Each possesses their own unique special magic ability which pauses the game and deals death to everyone around. These come in the form ... ...(1-2) must battle through hordes of warriors and bosses in order to ultimately defeat the tyrant Death Adder. The combat, whilst a little repetitive is very intense and technique must be worked upon to play effectively. - Its not just a button-basher. This is probably one of the most important games of all time and is a benchmark in gaming history, it was the inspiration for classics such as Streets of Rage and also spawned many sequels. Definitely ...

Advantages: good simple fun, charming graphics Disadvantages: feels quite dated
Golden Axe is a cracking little fantasy-themed side-scrolling fighting game from the distant past that still remains good fun today. The game gives you option to play as a burly sword-wielding barbarian, an acrobatic female warrior or Gillius Thunderhead, a musclebound dwarf with a huge battleaxe. Each character has different strenghts and weaknesses, with some being better at melee combat whilst others have stronger magic attacks. You build up you ... ...either in single or multiplayer mode, although it does feel rather dated now and its sleeker sci-fi cousin Alien Storm has perhaps aged a little better. Golden Axe is still great for a quick, nostalgic hack-and-slash session though. Summary: a fun little beat em up, good nostalgic fun. ...

Advantages: A classic game with simple but effective storylines and actions Disadvantages: Some claim it was too easy
This game was released back in 91 and was a sequel to the highly rated GoldenAxe. Having not played the previous version i was bought this version as a youngster and for a while was probably my favourite game on the megadrive. The story is very basic, you are tasked with retaining the goldenaxe from the dark guld, who you will meet at the end of the game.
The game is quite a simple side scrolling hack em up beat em up set in fantasy medieval times where at the end of each level you met an end boss and battled til the death. Simple but effective!
You could take control of one of three characters, a dwarf wielding a massive axe (well for his size anyway) called Gilius Thunderhead, a male barbarian type who used a sword but was named Ax Battler and a female character called Tyris Flare who also used a sword. Each one had their ...
Advantages: New characters, optional routes through levels, enjoyable two-player mode, nice level-design Disadvantages: Lacks the sparkle of the original, runs out of ideas quickly, gameplay gets repetitive, unoriginal
Combining that oh-so-illusive fun factor with immaculate presentation and imaginative design, Sega?s GoldenAxe was a hit back in 1989. Mega-Drive gamers the world over consider the classic hack ?n? slash adventure to be among the highlights of the 16-bit era of gaming, and though GoldenAxe wouldn?t be considered a huge success by today?s standards, Sega felt it deserved a sequel or two.
And so not long afterwards came sequel number one ? the imaginatively-named GoldenAxe 2. It was good fun, though somewhat crucified by the press for its failure to build upon (or even emulate) the original?s good work. For European gamers, it would prove to be the last instalment released on the Mega-Drive format and a rather unfulfilling end to the series.
But whilst our press was moaning about GoldenAxe 2 playing things too safe, Sega were ...
