I’ve got a secret……I’ve got a secret……….I’ve got a secret………….starting to ring any bells. Yes its that unbelievably annoying advert that has recently been on tv, except your not quite sure what its advertising, you have to go to their website to find out. Well for those who checked out the website, you were probably as unsurprised as my girlfriend to find out that the worst kept secret is in fact yet another slimming supplement. Wow what a clever marketing trick…..not. Lipobind is different to many other slimming pills that are essentially just laxatives. They fit into a different category called “Fat Binders”. Don’t be fooled though, they claim to work in a different way to a laxative, but have exactly the same overall effect.

WHAT IS LIPO BIND?

Lipo Bind is a slimming product that is used by adults who…………

1) Are worried about their fat intake and the long-term resulting health implications.
2) Wants to lose weight or maintain a healthy body weight.

That’s according to their website at least, however I can’t help but think that they are really for people who are trying to find a quick solution to their weight issues. This is what slimming pills are all about aren’t they? Surely if people were actually committed to their weight loss, they would adjust their diet and perhaps take some exercise? I think I would change these two statements for:

A product for adults that

1) Feel pressured about their weight from the media hype.
2) Want to lose weight without changing their diet or exercising.

Lets face it, that’s why diet supplements exist. I have never heard of or had a single client that took these pills because a healthy diet and exercise did not work for them. These pills are not aimed at people committed to a healthy lifestyle, quite simply they wouldn’t need them. They are aimed at people who are under pressure to be thin (celebrities are serial diet pill junkies) and for people that want maximum results with minimum effort - and lets face it, that’s everyone. They are selling the dream of a perfect body without having to spend hours in the gym. This is why Lipo bind is the number one slimming pill in the UK, in a market that has exploded in recent years and this is exactly the premise that makes them both dangerous and psychologically addictive.

WHATS IN LIPO BIND?

Well I’m afraid that’s the million dollar question!!!

“LIPObind is a natural supplement made from dried cactus extract that helps reduce the amount of fat our body absorbs from the food we eat. In clinical trials it has been shown to remove up to 27% of undigested fats from a standard meal.”

Well at least they’re original…….dried cactus extract!!!! Obviously it would be rude of me not to enlighten you to the exact properties of such a rare piece of British greenery. Hang on a second, I can’t, that’s because despite the fact that dried cactus has been used in thousands of different supplements over the years treating ailments like rashes to sore throats, there are 1000 different types of cactus, but Lipobind won’t tell us which one they are using, its protected by their patent.!!!!

Secondly, I’ve tried to hunt down any other products that use cactus in slimming pills and/or aid in the blocking of dietry fat, but there are none!!! This makes this product a little tricky to review because without the world of medicine being able to scrutinise the effectiveness of the cactus extract as a way of binding fat molecules, then we can only take the companies word that it actually works. There is no objectivity to its effectiveness.

This for me is a major problem. However there is one way of studying its effectiveness without knowing exactly what’s in it………customer reviews.

Having trawled my way through the internet, there is actually deeply contrasting reviews to its effectiveness but also one startling (although not surprising) common result.

For some users, the pills did absolutely nothing, no changes in weight, no apparent changes in how it made you feel. For others, and some what worryingly, the pill actually gave them constipation! This is in complete contrast to the job it should be doing!!!!!

However on the most part, it was found that weight loss did occur. Why? Well if you have read my other reviews on slimming pills this will come as no surprise, it made people go to the toilet more often. Now the makers will insist this is because of the cactus and unfortunately it is hard to disprove. I do know that the physiology behind fat binders means they do work, but are they safer or any different to a laxative. The answer to that is a resounding NO.

HOW DOES LIPOBIND WORK

Lipo Bind apparently work by removing fat from food

“Taken after food LIPObind attaches to the fat you’ve eaten to create a fat-fibre
complex that is then passed out of the body naturally and easily.”

A fat fibre complex? The pill is a combination of fibre and cactus which swells in your stomach in contact with food to make a fat fibre complex. In essence it means that the fat cannot be absorbed into the small intestine because it can’t be broken down, it will therefore be passed “naturally” out of the body.

Hang on a second though, this is not supposed to be a laxative it’s a fat binder? Take a look at this however……………….

Bulk-forming laxatives: work by softening and increasing the amount of your faeces - the fibre in the bran or isphagula husk "bulks out" the faeces. This then encourages your bowels to move and push the faeces out.

You guessed it. Lipobind appears to be acting in exactly the same way as a bulk forming laxative. So is it a fat binder or just a regular laxative. Well we’ll never know because they claim the cactus is the fat binder but they won’t let any one know what cactus they’re using so we can test it. Hmmmmmmm I smell a rat here.

For me the tell tell signs that support my argument of it being a regular laxative is found on the packet itself. Any product that tells you to make sure you are drinking 2 litres of water whilst taking the product means that they are protecting the user from the diuretic impact of the pills - in laymens terms, they will pass a lot of water out of their body. This is incredibly dangerous because it means the pills can make you chronically dehydrated very very quickly. Approximately 85% of your brain, 80% of your blood and 70% of your muscle is water. Take that away and you will quickly find that you can become tired, irritable, your sleeping patterns will become effected, you will feel weak etc etc etc (the list is exhaustive....hence why were all told to drink a minimum of 2 litres daily!)

PRICE

The cost of Lipobind is £29.95 for 60 tablets (lipobind.com). Oh my word this is unbelievably expensive!!! They tell you to take one tablet after every main meal (I’m guessing that’s breakfast, lunch and dinner, 3 meals a day) Even my simple maths tells me that you will finish these tablets in 20 days. It would be fair to say then that a months supply is costing you £45. This is unreal!!!!!!! Because this is a new product, I could not find it cheaper anywhere else on the internet.

WEBSITE

I had to write a quick comment about they’re website because personally I find it disgusting.

“Who doesn’t want to feel healthy, comfortable in their own skin and confident in their clothes? Everyone can achieve this by adopting a healthy lifestyle based on a sensible eating plan. But in today’s busy world, looking after ourselves properly can slip to the bottom of our ‘to do’ list.

LIPObind can help keep you focused, motivated and reduce the impact from any dietary slip-ups that occur. In the real world we will all lose our way from time to time, indulging in the occasional ‘bad’ food choice, but by taking LIPObind you can help limit the damage done to your weight management programme, leaving you free to be your best.

(Taken from the Lipobind.com website (2009) to support my review)

Unless I’m reading this incorrectly, they are suggesting that Lipobind is like a get out of jail free card every time you “fall off the wagon” with your healthy lifestyle. I cannot tell you the psychological impact this could have on dieters or for that matter anybody.. They are quite literally creating a dependency on a drug every time we “slip up”. I actually find this particulary disgusting because there are serious dangers connected to taking products like these. There so called experts should be ashamed.

CONCLUSION

Fat burner or plain old laxative, it doesn’t really matter but the effect is the same, it will make you go to the toilet more often. With this method of weight loss comes hidden physical and psychological dangers. They still ask you to take part in exercise and have a healthy diet too, so why not dodge the pills and make that your main focus. This is a much healthier, cheaper and more sustainable way to maintain or lose weight.

I’ve got a secret but its not Lipobind.

Hope that helps, Kind Regards,

Logan
