Advantages: great competitor Disadvantages: lousy temprement
Tiger Woods Love him or hate him, thats the question. Does he really deserve the title as the greatest golfer of all time. Well he has done an incredible amount in his time in the sport, However call it nostalgia but is still dont rate him as the top golfer. For me he may have reached no 14 on his way to Jacks 18. but this man will never be able to carry the mantle of a true great. Is it just me or do the media tend to let his cursing spats and tantrums ......modern era. If he is in the field for a tournament, more of the public come to see, fact. Golf for me is about tradition, why does Mr Woods insist on wearing T shirts. Collared shirts where good enough for every other player in history. Is this again down to the cash thing, pressure from sponsors to show of there products. What seems to escape some people is that Mr Woods is an icon to the younger generation, do we really want to see more of golfers ... Read review

...Ireland, depending on your politics!) Darren Clarke is the 35-year-old golfer from Dungannon, who currently lies at No.15 in the World Rankings, (15/4/2004) and who has been knocking at the door of true greatness for so long now that he has practically worn away the wood. ~ ~ Darren turned professional back in 1990, (played off a PLUS 4 handicap as an amateur!!) and promptly qualified to play on the European Tour at that year’s qualifying school. ......Leonard. On numerous other occasions Darren has deceived to flatter in Major Championships, and I have lost count of the amount of times I’ve placed an “each way” wager (top 6 finish) on him, only to see my hard earned spondoolicks (money) swelling the coffers of Mr. Ladbroke or some other bookmaker. ~ ~ I have now come to the (reluctant) conclusion that there is some sort of fatal flaw in Darren’s mental makeup, and will be very surprised if he ... Advantages: Continually improved throughout his career Disadvantages: He was a lot shorter than his rivals so he couldn't match the likes of Nicklaus for distance.
...that he was lucky Gary Player could hole a chip or bunker shot or play a ball dead by the hole side. No fluke was involved. The results were achieved only with remorseless practice. For both these shots Player has a method that may be unique. The stroke is a downward stab. His short game has remained Player’s great strength over a career which has lasted over 40 years, more than 25 of those seeing him contend for and win major championships. ......for fun. Opinion was that Gary had a hooker’s grip, that his swing was too flat and that he lacked rhythm and feel for the game. Perhaps unnoticed was the effectiveness of that stab on the short shots. You could say that he was the first great golfer to expect to get down in 2 more once he was near the green. Another first for Player was the emphasis he pt on physical fitness and diet. Before his time, most golfers considered that just playing ... Read review

...are moving on and still Colin Montgomerie awaits his first major success. Unfortunately Mongomerie does not seem to be getting close to a major title any longer. It is some time now since he came so close at the US Open. Since then the game has moved on and the emergence of first David Duval and then Tiger Woods seems to have sent Montgomerie backwards. So has he got the game and the temperament to win a major. Many of Montgomerie’s wins on the ......or got himself into position ahead of the last round to blow away the opposing players. This seems to indicate that his game is together. Montgomerie is as natural a golfer as you can find. However this is not as straightforward as it sounds. He is not a manufactured or constructed golfer like Faldo but he is not a true natural like Ballesteros. Montgomerie’s game has come together from years of practice from his early years in West Scotland but ... Read review

...a year of momentous troughs, Ian Woosnam is on the crest of a wave. Having secured an unlikely third World Matchplay crown at Wentworth last Sunday, the stocky Welshman can put behind him some of the disappointments that have darkened his skies this season. The autumnal bleakness that accompanied Woosnam’s 2&1 victory over gritty Dubliner Padraig Harrington was a world away from the sultry July afternoon in Lancashire that witnessed his subjection ......lead in the final round of the Open at Lytham, Woosnam was told that his caddy was told carrying one club too many and was given a two-shot penalty. Not being able to withstand the fiercest of low punches, Woosnam wilted away to finish down the field. Not only did he miss out on his second major championship, but the loss of prize money cost him a place in the Ryder Cup team. Woosnam had received a sickening blow on many counts. The culpable caddy ... Read review
