Advantages: Moving, a children's novel with depth and warmth Disadvantages: Some serious subject matter - be wary for younger readers
My eldest son is in Year 4 (second year of Juniors or 8-9 year olds in old money) and last term he and I read GoodnightMisterTom together in support of the WW2 syllabus subject that they were following. I found that what is essentially a children's novel (in the vein of The Railway Children and The Chronicles of Narnia) and which appears on the school syllabus, had both the depth and gravity of a novel aimed at adults, whilst remaining accessible to the younger reader. To be frank, I was surprised at how moved I was when reading it.
The book, by MichelleMagorian, was published in 1980 and tells the story of a WW2 evacuee, Will, who leaves London to live in the depths of the English countryside with a grumpy widower, Tom Oakley. We meet Will on his arrival in the village of Weirwold and it is revealed that Will has come from ...
I watched Goognight misterTom quite a few years back when it was first shown on ITV i didn't realise until a few years ago that it had been based on a book by MichelleMagorian when i was looking in WH Smith i i saw it on the shelf and i instantly bought the book as i thought the film was excellent.
I paid £4.99 for GoodnightmisterTom and i read it in a couple of days from start to finish i couldn't put the book down as it was so gripping and you can actually get into the lives on the characters.
GoodnightmisterTom is based in war time Britain in 1939 and a young boy called William Beech about 8 or 9 years old is evacuated to the country and placed with a gruff old man called Thomas (Tom) Oakley. After a few months there the pair warm to each other and become friends.
MichelleMagorian wrote this book excellently it is ...

I first came across the book 'Goodnight Mr Tom' when my daughter (now in her thirties) read it in her final year at primary school as part of a project on the Second World War.
I have always made it a rule to read any of the books my kids were studying so that I could discuss it with them, and I remember being very touched by this lovely story.
I have read the book since and still enjoy it; I think it is just as suitable for adults as well as children. The television adaption with John Thaw in the late 90's was also very good, and is available on DVD..
The book was written by MichelleMagorian, and published in 1981. 'Goodnight Mr Tom' comes from one child's point of view, a thin young boy named William. His mother calls him Willie, but his new carer, Mr. Tom Oakley ...
