Those who know me know just how much I like chocolates, and trying new brands is something that excites me. Whilst doing the shopping the other day, I came across boxes of Gordon Ramsay's Just Desserts Chocolates at Tesco. Priced at a whopping £5.68, I initially disregarded them, but then I remembered I had some money off coupons which I could use. So I thought I'd treat myself.
The box describes the chocolates as 'chocolates of unique character' and they are just that. Each individual chocolate is inspired by recipes in Gordon Ramsay's book, 'Just Desserts', which makes for an interesting selection white, milk and dark chocolate truffles, all made from the finest Belgian chocolates.
The 215g box contains 16 chocolate truffles and there are two of each variety. The box looks classy from the outside and does not disappoint once you open it up. The chocolates sit in a silver plastic tray and are covered by a silky paper wrapper, which has Gordon Ramsay's stylish autograph embossed across it. A rich profusion of chocolatey aromas greets you and entices you to give the chocolates a try.
So let's not waste any more time. I shall start with my favourite truffle, 'Salted Fudge and Honeycomb'....
SALTED FUDGE & HONEYCOMB
This is a rich butter fudge truffle, covered in a dark Belgian chocolate which contains honeycomb chips. I find this chocolate quite unusual because the saltiness of the fudge actually accentuates its overall sweetness. The dark chocolate, with its bitter taste, then quells the sweet flavour of the fudge. Of all the truffles, this is my favourite because it has a diverse range of flavours and textures - from the soft, creaminess of the fudge to the crunchiness of the honeycomb pieces.
CAPPUCCINO BRULEE
The 'Cappuccino Brulee' is a coffee truffle covered in dark chocolate and sprinkled with white chocolate flakes. This is another truffle which I liked. The dark chocolate enriches the cuppuccino flavour of the centre and makes for a rich, creamy truffle. I am not normally a fan of dark chocolate per se, but in this truffle, the bitterness of the chocolate really blends well with the coffee flavour.
ALMOND AND AMARETTO
This is a white chocolate truffle with roasted almonds and Italian Amaretto liqueur. I like this truffle a lot. The creamy white chocolate centre is offset by a mellow Amaretto flavour. There are delicious crunchy almond pieces hidden in the outer white chocolate layer, which provides a nice level of crunchiness against the softness of the truffle centre. This chocolate is quite sweet, but not sickeningly so.
NUT CLUSTER
The 'Nut Cluster' is a hazelnut praline truffle covered in milk chocolate and caramelised hazelnut pieces. I like this chocolate but not as much as some of the others. The praline centre is pleasantly soft, but too sweet for my liking. This prevents the true hazelnut flavour from coming through.
PISTACHIO TRUFFLE
The pistachio truffle is a simple-looking chocolate: a milk chocolate log, with a soft white chocolate and pistachio centre, decorated with a pistachio nut. As you bite into it, a mint green centre reveals itself. As flavours go, pistachio is not my favourite, but combined with the creamy white chocolate, the taste is actually quite pleasant. The pistachio nut is sour in flavour and contrasts well with the sweet, creamy centre.
GINGER TRUFFLE
The 'Ginger Truffle' is fairly unique: the centre is a combination of white chocolate and stem ginger, sprinkled with meringue pieces and decorated in dark chocolate. It is not personally a truffle I like, because the flavours are very rich and intense. The ginger is especially overpowering and the dark chocolate leaves a bitter taste in your mouth. This is definitely a truffle for connoisseurs!
ORANGE AND CHAMPAGNE
The 'Orange and Champagne' truffle has a white chocolate centre with a hint of orange oil and Marc de Champagne. It is covered in a milk chocolate layer and white chocolate streaks. Unfortunately, when it comes to chocolate truffles, my least favourite varieties are orange and strawberry creams, and I'm sorry to say that this is really just a posh orange cream. I find the orange flavour quite sickly; it completely overpowers the white chocolate in the centre. There is a slight hint of champagne, but orange flavour completely ruins it for me.
STRAWBERRY BOMBE
Last but not least...the 'Strawberry Bombe'. Given what I have just said about chocolate creams, I fully expected to hate this truffle. However, I can honestly say that I didn't. In fact, I actually liked it. The truffle is simply a white chocolate shell, containing white chocolate truffle and real strawberry pieces. As soon as you take a bite, a sensational explosion of fresh strawberries greets you. Unlike traditional strawberry creams, the taste is wholly natural and you can even taste bits of strawberry. The white chocolate, with its sweetness, actually accentuates the flavour of the strawberries. Overall, this is a quality truffle and ranks as one of my favourites.

Gordon Ramsay's Just Dessert Chocolates have impressed me. What I particularly like about these truffles is that a diverse range of flavours and used, so there are bound to be some which will appeal to you.
The only factor that puts me off buying them too often is the price. They are very expensive, so it's probably worth looking out for any special offers if you can.
Overall, though, an impressive selection of tasty truffles. Why not give them a try...?

GORDONRAMSAY'S JUSTDESSERTS (16 chocs)
I had these bought me for my birthday, my husband and I shared them as I was not really supposed to eat them, but my oh my am I so glad that I was naughty, I though Thorntons Luxury Chocolates were brilliant, but these beat them hands down.
GordonRamsay's JustDesserts are the Rolls Royce of Chocolates. They are the 'elite' in chocolates. They are, wonderful, the flavours are everything that I describe below, none of the flavours over power, they, all bend in lovely together.
The Packaging the box is shiny silver in colour with a shiny purple panel on the left hand side. It show a picture of the chocolates that you will find inside the box and has GordonRamsay written across the right hand side of the box.
Now, these will go lovely with a bottle of champagne, two crystals ...
GordonRamsay's JustDessertsJustDesserts? Well, the clue was in the title all along, I suppose. GordonRamsay, celebrity chef, made this dubious contribution to the glutted chocolate market in 2003, hot on the heels of his other nefarious activities in the Celebrity Chef spectrum. I for one succumbed to the hype?and suffice to say I got my 'JustDesserts'!
To clear up any confusion from the outset, these aren't actually desserts at all, in fact they're 'just' chocolates. Although chocolates could presumably constitute a 'dessert' if taken in sufficient quantities, I certainly wouldn't recommend eating these in large quantities, unless you're a glutton... for punishment.
The packaging is a neat, purple & silvery affair that frankly resembles a book cover more than a box of chocolates, with an 'Arial' type font & Gordon ...
