Gordon's gin is at least one of the brands of the juniper-derived spirit that theediscerning has heard of, at least. So for something so esteemed as that to make an alcopop you must be expecting something a bit posher than the average.
...a big swirling G, and Gordon's Edge is in dominant black on a silver block.
Also the bottles have an edge - taller and straighter, with a nice angular shoulder. Again it's a dark, rich green.
Which only goes to disguise the fact that the contents look just like slightly sparkling water on pouring. The great thing is, as well, the Edge goes down just as quickly and easily as water.
Theediscerning once had a silly university tutor who kept saying we'd all be having Pimms on the lawn over the summer hols. Even though this was a horrible inner city polyversity as well.
The point of mentioning this is to tell you all that theediscerning doesn't know anything about Pimms. He doesn't really know anything about the classic alcoholic mixes anyway - what is a martini cocktail, and why isn't just plain Martini used - or is it?
Similarly, even some of the plainest spirits are alien to his taste-buds, so something like gin 'n' it hasn't really crossed his lips, to his memory. (His partner's own sloe gin, that's another matter. Wine bottles of it disappear in days...)

This is borne out in the packaging. The multipack's cardboard container is a rich green, with silver slivers that on closer examination are supposed to be views to the liquid bubbling away. The silver whisps up into a big swirling G, and Gordon's Edge is in dominant black on a silver block.

This really is one of the smoothest, drinkable alcopops to be sampled by theed'. There's nothing of the gomminess of, say, Reef, or anything - it just floats from bottle or glass to stomach as soon as you can think of shutting your eyes to taste it further - why do we think that's necessary, anyway?!
As such it might actually pass your tongue without any of the flavour registering, but hold it in the mouth and you do get a decent kick of lime. Yes, there is a lot to be said about lime being lemon's grown-up big brother, and here it's totally true - the actually-very-different-to-lemon-but-still-citrussy flavour comes across really well.
If there is much of a gin taste to it, well, that is 100% disguised, to theediscerning's palate. There is none of the kick to the drink you would get, say, if you were trying to make your own gin cocktails/alcopops/whatever you call them.
Sampling it last night, theed's partner said it was perfumey and sweet, "as gin can sometimes be", but that only makes it sound like you're knocking back Chanel number 7 and some honey chaser. What nonsense she spouts sometimes!!
If you think alcopops sometimes have unnatural flavours, and can stick around your mouth leaving an aftertaste, and so on to your annoyance, this is NOT the case here. Indeed, you might well get a bottle down you without having any knowledge you were knocking back 5.5% proof cocktails.
What you do get is a completely smooth, relaxing, sweet and limey drink, that is just right for stocking up on now, in case we *do* get a summer this year.
It might actually be a shame that it goes down so easily, as you sometimes need a couple of bottles to register the fact you've had anything - and, of course, that might be dangerous as this is no weakling of a drink. But to get you in the mood (whichever mood you think might apply) this hits the mark.
Something else to change your mood is the knowledge that a certain high street supermarket (alright, S*****ield) near theediscerning has been clearing out these like nobody's business. And not at the (bottle!)-bank-breaking price of £1.89 for every 275ml bottle as per usual.
No, theediscerning was lucky to find these last week (at time of writing - mid-May 2003) at 99p for four.
He can only hope now for your sake that you can find the same. That certain supermarket do seem to do this a lot more regularly than many other retailers, as they had Bambao bin-ends on at the same deal (for more information, see an old op on the stuff).
Theed's partner actually said the Edge liquid had some of the same slight gingery catch to it as Bambao does. Theediscerning didn't find this at all, as he says - perhaps his palate doesn't register such sourness as such. But he does declare Gordon's entry into alcopops (in Lime flavour anyway - not sure if there are others) a winner. Of course, at nearly £2 a bottle it's for the richest of the rich, but 25p a throw, it's worth 5 out of 5.
There's really nothing wrong with this product, so that's the star rating it's getting today.

If you do get smitten by the subject of this op, then drink responsibly - know your limits, don't have too many, and recycle the bottles after you. Thanks.
Advantages: Tastes like gin and tonic Disadvantages: ...so why not have a gin and tonic?
...is reassuring to see the Gordon's logo on a bottle of Edge and know that whatever else may be lurking in the bottle, the gin is top quality. And what a fine bottle. Slightly squat with a wide body, angular shoulders and a hint of green in the glass, this is a bottle that says 'Hi there, I'm going to refresh you while simultaneously making you look cool'. The label is a plain non-gimmicky black and white job, with a yellow flash at the neck and base ... ...prominent feature is that sweeping Gordon's signature. There's a growing desire among manufacturers to move alcopops away from the teenage market and towards a demographic that's older, wiser, more sophisticated...read 'richer'. They're targeting the twenty- and thirty-somethings and in particular they want to get more males in on the alcopop scene. Hence brightly-coloured labels and contents are out and we get products like Gordon's Edge. You know, ...

Advantages: its ready to be drunk Disadvantages: it tasts fowl
G & T is my tipple nothing better than getting in from a hard day at work and relaxing with a Gin and Tonic.
So when I saw Gordons Edge I thought great I'll have some of that and threw it in my shopping trolly.
It seemed the perfect answer. I prefer my tonic with a hint of lime, but cant always get it. I hate my tonic flat which happens when the bottle has been open for a couple of days. I also hate it warm and if you forget to but a bottle in the ... ...T
This is the answer I thought, a freshly opened bottle every time it has lime, it wont be flat and I can keep a few in the fridge so they are always chilled.
Then I tryed it. OK I know its an alcopop but this was sweet and sickly and left a nasty after taste and not a hint of gin, it doesnt even taste of lime and lemon. Even my teenage daughter who is into alcopops didnt like it. One swig and she handed it back. Although it did clean the sink ...

Advantages: Cheap, Unique in the market Disadvantages: Specialised Taste, strong kick
Gordon's Edge is a very novel idea from people who thought they'd seen a gap in the popular (and profitable) alchopop market. We have vodka based drinks, and rum based drinks, why not one based on gin made by the most famous gin company?
The simple reason why is that the alchopop market is based at a age group which probably won't appreciate the taste of gin. It's not often you find groups of 18 - 23 year olds all drinking G+T in a pub or on a night ... ...have the desired effect, however gordon's seems to be trying to offer something the product cannot deliver.
Right from the first time you open the bottle you know if you're going to like it or not. There is that familiar smell of gin and although not all that strong it seems unexpected after the packaging and so has added impact.
The taste has been dulled by adding alot of citrus flavouring, however it is still definately there and the other major ...

Advantages: more grown up than most alcopops Disadvantages: doesn't come close to a good G&T
I actually got quite excited when I saw these bottles appear on the adverts and headed straight to the pub! I'm a proper G&T drinker though most of my mates take the piss out of me for being posh etc. I'd even made suggestions to my mates that they wouldn't have a problem with it if it was in a bottle, coming from the proper alcopop generation and all (Oh why didn't I patent it?!)
In lots of ways they're your average alcopop, at 5.5% abv and at ... ...bar)to the other big brands, and so I expected a similar quality. So there I was, in the pub, and very disappointed. I tried the lemon one first, and it wasn't what I expected. I was hoping for a cool, refreshing but sharp tonic taste, but what I got was the flavour of cheap lemonade. It tasted like artificial sweetners but it didn't say whether it contained them or not. Next was the lime, an improvement. At least it's different from all the other ...

Advantages: Lovely and sweet without being sickly Disadvantages: Could have more choices on flavour
I'm not a gin person but as this was the only alcopop with lime flavour that was left i bought it and was very pleasantly supprised. It's got a nice sharp flavour and unlike many alcopops it doesn't taste sickly sweet. There is enough lime to complement the gin without either being too overpowering. Another good thing is unlike vodka alcopops it doesn't make you feel like someone turned on the central heating and you can happily dance the night away ... ...nice if you could buy a bigger bottle in the supermarkets as I don't know about you but for me one isn't enough. There's nothing else to say but i've got another twenty or so words to go so please ignore this rambling and don't mark me down because of it :@). ...

Advantages: A sweet alternative to Gin and Tonic Disadvantages: Tastes like lemonade, No pizzazz
A-board. How many times have you walked past these advertising stands and just ignored them? Well not me because they often display special offers and many new delights.
On this night in July, the shop advertised the simply words:
NEW: Gordon?sEdge £1:65 a bottle
This seemed ideal for Mum and I. A new Alcopop made with the prized Gordon?s Gin ? just what we need for the hottest weekend of the year.
SO WHAT IS GORDON?SEDGE?
This is a new Alco pop from the famous Gin maker; it comes in two varieties Gordon?s and Lime or Gordon?s and Lemon. Each drink is in a 275ml bottle and is 5.5%abv. The bottles carry the responsible logo that indicates that the alcoholic content is 1.5 units.
This is the first time that I had come across the product and as advised above, the price is £1.65 a bottle. With regards to ...

Advantages: I only wasted £1.98 Disadvantages: Where shall I start? Tastes of nothing, smells of nothing - arrggghhhh, just read the op!
Gordon's gin. Conjures up visions of a sharp tasting, tangy drink which kicks at the back of your throat in a not entirely pleasant way. Delicious though and quickly produces the desired effect of being so drunk you'll get up on the kareoke stage and happily strip to Like A Virgin. No??? Must be just me then! The taste of a Gordon's gin is nothing less than sublime, I feel decadent when I order a Gordon's and I love the way the name just rolls of your tongue at the bar... 'A double Gordon's with a dash of lemonade please and be generous with the ice.' So I like Gordon's then? Yes, love it! So in Londis tonight when I spotted a small glass bottle labelled 'Gordon's Edge Lemon' I grabbed a couple of bottles. Then I realised they were on BOGOF (buy one get one free for all you non-shoppers out there!) so I grabbed a couple more ...

Advantages: Refreshing and easy to drink Disadvantages: Maybe TOO easy to drink...
I had never before heard of "Gordon's Edge" alcopops
although i was very fond of the gin itself as an occasional tipple.
And EXCEPTIONALLY fond of using it as a mixer in cocktails.....MMMMMM...Cocktails.....
Ok the packaging... well it's in a green bottle (As you'd expect) with the words GORDONSactually etched into the bottle...perhaps just incase the label fell off and someone else tried to take the credit???
The labels are very plain green and white advertising either with LIME or LEMON. (The only two flavous available at the moment .To the best of my knowledge)
Must admit the packaging is not that memorable as i cant really remember too much about it to describe it...mind you i did have a few other drinks before i discovered this one!!
Prices vary on this drink. I was in a hotel at the time so it was quite expensive but in ...
