...this compendium, but there were also some truly awful ones as well. Fans of thrillers may or may not love this book; I'm a huge thriller fan and I neither enjoyed nor disliked the stories on offer here. I'll go back to James Patterson's thrillers and give these a miss next time.

Advantages: luminated writing, interesting viewpoint Disadvantages: Drags a bit
..., there was little to differentiate between them.
What impressed me was the sense of caos Greene managed to paint for his readers when needed. It is easy to imagine yourself amongst the hustle and bustle of Brighton Pier and it was easy to imagine how a sense of panic could lead to tragedy, as it did on more than one occurance. Equally, the emmence feeling of loneliness, perhaps the only character trait Pinkie shared with Rose, or the fear fellow gang members and eventual victims of Pinkie felt. Describing the feelings behind the act with such understanding and sensitivity is what makes Graham Greene and iconic writer.
Conclusion
*************
Greene's talent to pull the reader into the lives of his characters, to force them to commit to them, sympathise and identify with them is what makes him a fantastic writer. Although Brighton Rock is still...

Advantages: Gives an interesting perspective on life Disadvantages: The black depression that follows reading it
...I'd read Our Man in Havannah, which was a fairly easy going and generally fantastic book, so I decided to read something else by Graham Greene, and picked the book that's probably his most famous.
At first the book focuses on a man working for a newspaper in Brighton, but he is quickly murdered and the dubious role of main character shifts to his killer, gang leader and petty criminal Pinkie. From the initial murder the entire book spirals further and further down until its the only contender for most depressing book in the world. Discussions of good and evil, which I'm sure were fascinating and enlightening, were swamped in the horrible grey mist emanating from this book. It sucks out your soul. Anyway.
The plot follows Pinkie's efforts to control his gang, cover up the initial murder and remain in control of organised crime...
