Gran Turismo 2. I’d seen a lot of reviews about it, and I’d seen it being played on Tv shows when it was first released but I’d never actually got round to playing it and as an avid fan of car games, I don’t really know why I held back so much from playing it!
I then saw it available for rent in Blockbusters, so I thought what the hell and rented it, and I’m glad I did! Suddenly I was deeply engrossed in this game, although I didn’t know how to play it properly or what to do, I knew to race and that was it. I was playing the arcade version and not the tournament version and even with the arcade version I was very impressed with the amount of cars and types of cars available. Little did I know there were 500 other cars waiting for me on the other disc!
The actual game itself is of a very high standard. You can race town cars,
executive cars, sports and rally cars and enter into different races depending on your licence. Yes, that’s right, I did say licence! To get your licences, you have to partake in tasks to prove that you are a good enough driver to race on a course with a certain licence required. This isn’t really all that hard to do, but it does take patience.
The cars in Gran Turismo are excellent. With so many available I thought that the control of the cars, look and sound of them would all be a bit of a let down. I was wrong. Each car has its own unique sound, true to the real life sound. They each have their own capabilities such as speed and performance. Each car also costs a different amount of money. How do you get money? By either winning or taking part in races. You can also take your car to the garage and upgrade them! (more about this later).
So, you start off with 10,000 credits or pounds, whatever you want to call it. You then have to buy yourself a motor to race with. All the garages are based in different parts of the city, all the different parts relate to the cost of the cars (so east of the city might have executive, while west has town cars etc). In one of the city’s you can buy second hand cars, which arent as good as the brand new ones, but is a very good way to start off in the game. Win races with that car, trade it in for a better model so you can win even more races at higher levels.
One of the best things about Gran Turismo, and one of the things I most enjoyed about playing the game was the fact that you are able to customise your car by taking it to the garage. Buying a second hand car for a cheap price then doing it all up is very addictive! You can buy things such as new mufflers to get that authentic racing sound and new engines, and hey, while your at it, lets add a bit more Turbo to your car. Adding new bits will increase the power of your car, therefore increasing the speed (a good tip here is to then enter the car model races which you’ll find in the ‘special’ section of the garage. You race against cars of the same model and if you have beefed your car up, your in with a high chance of winning and therefore getting more dosh!)
The only real thing that annoys me about this game is that even when I turned damage on, I could drive into a wall at 200mph and bounce off! I hate games that do that, I want to be able to do my car in until im done with it! Also, you can only view your car from the outside and I like to get into my cars and see the dashboard etc. I do realise that if they did this it would have taken the people who made the game an extra year to have finished it! You’d probably need another disc too, and its already 2 discs!
Theres loads more about this game that I haven’t told you about, but if I did I would here all day! ….and probably tomorrow… All I can say is if you like car games with that bit of realism, then go and play this game by any means that you can! If your into arcade type games when you can sit down , have a race for half an hour and then switch off, this game really isn’t for you as the arcade section could probably get a little boring after a day or two.
Overall, a great game with a very high addiction factor. It will keep you amused for days!
