Wow! That was my first expression when I played Gran Turismo 2 for the first time. I've actually got a PS2, but nevertheless, i'm sure that the game quality is just as good on PS1. I bought this game as soon as i got the PS2, for just £17. What a bargin. It must be the best money that i've ever spent!
What makes GT2 so great is its shear scale. It has quite a few courses to choose from, about 26 i believe, which can all be raced in reverse, effectively doubling the number if tracks. Plus, you get the Laguna Seca track, a real life racing track from the USA, with the famous 'Rollercoaster Turn', which has been faithfully reproduced in this game.
The tracks themselves are very well designed. They all have their own unique characteristics, and you never get a feeling of "I've seen this somewhere else", even when you drive the circuits that are actually shortened versions of some of the others, such as the Seattle and Rome short and long tracks. Plus, no two tracks look or drive the same. You have to completely adapt your driving style to suit eacj individual track.
Then there are the cars. How many you ask? Far to many to count, but as far as i can remember, there are over 700 of the things. Basically, if you can name a car, bar just a small few, they are all there. From your bog standard Vauxhall Vectra, Astra and Corsa to Nissan Skyline, to Toyota GT1 racing car, to Suzuki Escudo hill climb car, to Porsche (RUF as it's called in the game, a tunning company thats specialises in tuning Porsche cars). You name it, it's got it. About the only notable exceptions are Ferrari and Masserati, but not many others. You've got road cars, touring cars, sports cars, super cars, rally cars, hill climb cars, dragsters and full-out racing cars.
And yes, all of them have unique handling characteristics. And yes, all of them are fully customisable. The only downside is that you have to buy them before you can drive them. Thats not to much of a problem though, once you get going the money soon comes rolling in, plus when you win certain races, you get given cars, sometimes worth up to $500,000 , enough to buy and tune several other cars once sold. Then you meet the other drawback. You have to store them all in your garage, which can only ( :) ) take 100 cars!
This game is truly unique, and untll GT3 comes out in the summer, I really do not believe it can be beaten, by any game on any platform. And, now that it is available on the Platinum range, it is absolutely amazing value. Like I said at the start, the best £17 I have ever spent

A fair comment on the game, but what does spoil the 'Real Driving Simulator' monicker is car damage (ever drove into a wall at 200 km/h and driven off again?), mechanical failures (revving you engine up to 9000 rpm without having a piston go through the bonnet?. I'm sure there must be a good reason for this, however, I will win enough races to by the Escudo (pikes peak version)!

Good opinion...it might be useful to compare it against its competetors, and also add a section about how realistic it is...otherwise well done.

Advantages: Crisp graphics, brilliant sound track and engine notes, playability, learning curve is set right, vast array of cars Disadvantages: Not very much!
Advantages: HD support for gaming, films in the shape of blu ray and sound. Along with a free online service. Disadvantages: Downloading can take up hard drive space quickly.
