Facts: ***** 594 cars Worldwide brands of cars
28 tracks New rallying and drag car racing tracks
One HUGE mode - Gran Turismo Two cds
Publisher: SCEE Developer: Polyphony Digital Released: February 2000 ------------------------------------------ Opinion: ******* When Gran Turismo was released, i thought that was the best car game ever and no game will be better. Well i was wrong, i admit because of the sequel is EVEN BETTER, YES BETTER. Thanks to Polyphony Digital. ------------------------------------------ Gameplay: ******** Cars & Handling: ############# First of all the cars, there is a scrapyard full of cars, 594 in all. Polyphony's licensing team have signed up a wealth of car manufactures - the best around, upto 33.
The cars are a mix of old and new, with cars you would dream of buying and classic cars made yonks ago. Even though, Polyphony couldn't sign up Volve and Saab, it isn't a big loss as GT boasts, Alfa Romeo, Chevrolet, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota and a whole lot more which include rally cars.
Imagine buying the new VW Beetle, Ford Cougar, Alfa Romeo 156, Lotus Espirit, BMW 328i and a Mini
Cooper. They all handle just like the real thing, the front-wheel-drive Alfa running its nose wide if you go too fast into a bend, and the Mini Cooper cornering like a go-kart.
The classic cars involve a 22bhp Fiat 500 from 1975, in which you'll need to change down to second gear to get up the hills or a 1971 Nissan Skyline, forebear of the GT-R.
The cars are split up into three sections.
Class-C, or City Runner Class, lets you race a variety of runarounds, including the Mini Cooper 1.3i, VW Golf GTi, and Peugeot 206 GTi. All of which handle just as ropily as you'd expect them to.
Class-B contains MD classics such as Mercedes CLK 320 Sports, which not only looks like a huge chunk of metal, but handles like one too.
Class-A contains the creme de la creme of sports cars, including the Chevrolet Corvette Coupe and the Lotus Elise 190, which simply drives like a dream.
It doesn't matter if you can't tell the difference between a 138 Type-S from a 208 Type-E. But all the cars are perfect with realistic handling.
Also you can build a garage yard full of you favourite cars. Engines can be uprated, suspension stiffened, clutch plates strengthened, gear ratios altered and racing body kits added.
Tracks: ****** There is all the tracks from the last game in here, as well as new tracks such as the rally and drag ones, so the total number of tracks (inlcuding variations) is 28. You will need strategic skill and judgement, carefully choosing car performance and features and tuning and driving styles to match different courses.
Here are some examples of the courses:
The Laguna Seca Raceway which is based on a real circuit, the only one in the game. It winds gradually up a hill before going over a blind crest and then plunging terrifyingly downwards through a rollercoaster-like twists and turns. There are steep hills, too, in Grindelwald, which is set amongst mountains and isn't the place to take your 22bhp Fiat 500. The Super Speedway, meanwhile, is an Indianapolis-style oval where you'll need to set your downforce to minimum, whack your gear ratios right up and try to squeeze out every last mph of top speed as you hammer four abreast down the straights. And then there are all the old favourites, like Grand Valley and the High Speed Ring, which you should be able to breeze around with your eyes closed by now.
The new features include the rally car racing in which is very diffcult controlling, which is a good point, with all the sliding around. Then there is the drag car racing which doesn't really matter, as this game would still be good without it!
The gameplay is really realistic making sure you have months of playing as it is so difficult to complete.
All the other areas in the game: ************************ Graphics: ******* The cars are amazingly recreated with lots of visual detail making the replays seem so worthwhile watching. The cars looking so stunning with the polished bodywork and it's shiny and slick. The floolights and sun and effective and glows on the cars. Whether you all playing in the dark or in the light the graphics look fab and clear. The incredibly detailed backdrops are amazing which makes a complete replay look so fab, you will soon be hooked on the replays instead of concentrating on finishing the game!
Sound: ****** The gameplay and graphics are perfect, while you watch and play you need some sound, and there is great sound, with music and engines providing it. There is some well known singers and bands, like Ash, Fatboy Slim, Stereophonics, Propellerheads and The Cardigans to name but a few. With all the different engine noises, it is amazing, Polyphony have put a lot of hard work into this game, here are some examples of engine noises, the Ford GT40 crackles and the Elise blaps up and down through its gears.
Value for money and lifespan: *********************** Well at £20 it's a bargain, with all those staggering stats and it is the best car sim and one of the finest single-player game in the history of Psone. You will be playing for months as it is so realistic and great. With two cds, one with the arcade mode, ect and the other one with the full-blooded Gran Turismo, which takes ages to complete trust me.
Overall: ****** Lost for words, JUST GET THE STUPID THING!
