When I was a young man,ie,in my early twenties, I went through a rather lengthy period of experimenting with different drinks. In the process I also drank my way through a heck of a lot of liquers including the likes of Drambuie and Grand Marnier, and after mature reflection I concluded that these were my two big "...faves...".
Grand Marnier Orange Liquer is produced and bottled in France by a distiller known as Marnier Lapostolle and they have been producing this most pleasant liquer since the 1880's.It comes in a very attractive bottle containing 70 cl with an equally nice seal in the front. Its alcohol by volume (ABV) content is the usual 40% -that is,I believe, typical for liquers.
The main consituents of Grand Marnier turn out to Orange Peel, Cognac and Sugar Syrup. The product is aged in wine cellars and filtered and the end product is a very smooth, rich, liquer. As regards taste I find it has a very full taste with a very slight bitter flavour. It is certainly smooth and glides down the old throat easily enough. As regards colour Grand Marnier is medium-amber and also has a pleasant smell. Most liquers do not go exceptionally well with food and this is no exception - it does, however, make a nice appetiser as a pre dinner drink.
Fortunately the French distillery do export a lot of the stuff to the UK so you should not have any real problem finding Grand Marnier. Many off licences, pubs and supermarkets stock it and most hotel bars will also have it in on the shelves.
There is always a downside isnt there ! It is a tad expensive with a bottle likely to setyou back between Stg 17 and Stg 20 pounds. So it is,eg,considerably dearer than blended whisky and for some whisky-based liquers.
Grand Marnier is a pleasant drink to have on its own or wish a splash of ice. On hot days I prefer to make it into a long drink with a copious supply of ice cubes. It gets high marks from me for its bottle, its taste, its quality and its smell. Price wise,as mentioned earlier,it is a tad expensive.Final verdict is that this French product is really one of the nicer liquers around.
Thanks very much for reading and rating !
