Grand Theft Auto Liberty City Stories

Grand theft auto first came on the scene in 1997 and has been going strong ever since. The original version of grand theft auto was a top down view, and then in 2001 Rockstar released GTA 3 which revolutionized gaming and made GTA the biggest gaming franchise.

Grand theft auto has come to the handheld before but it was in the style of its earlier versions (top down view). Whereas now we can experience the glory of the game in the palm of our hands! I am so surprised that Rockstar have managed to cram so much into the portable version, we also have a feature that the Xbox and pc had which enables you to listen to you own mp3's while playing the game apposed to the radio stations.

The game is set back in liberty city which is where Grand Theft Auto 3 was set, the map is pretty much the same but there are several changes, the game is actually 3 years before GTA 3 in 1998. The game seems to be like a expansion pack for Grand Theft Auto 3 rather than being a whole new game like "Vice City" and "San Andreas" but I suppose this is the fact that it has been crammed onto a 1.8gb disk.

One of the things that have made this game so popular is the fact that you have so much freedom in the game and can roam around doing your own thing. The selection of cars is quite impressive, and yes you can steal them all or just blow them up!

The basic idea of the game is doing missions for the Leone family (mafia). You are a guy named Toni Cipriani who works for Salvatore Leone the leader of a mafia. as usual you are getting it from all sides and you will start and end gang wars with other gangs. Once under his control you go on a journey of killing, stealing, and blowing things up! The story part of the game is about 40% of the game and as usual there are many side missions for you to do, It is also really fun just causing havoc I can't see how this game can get boring!

Compared to past games the mission times have been reduced quite a bit (due to the game being on a handheld). And as usual you have a great selection of weapons, you can only carry 1 weapon at a time but ammo for one weapon in a class will work for another weapon in that class. I have noticed that you don't get as many cops after you like in the other GTA games, this is probably due to not being able to display over much over 30 frames. One thing that is great is the loading times, the game loads the map at the start and doesn't load again until you come to a cut screen also it doesn't load while driving around. As usual the radio stations add comedy to the game they have been slightly reduced but still entertaining especially the adverts!

In this latest game they have added multiplayer features there are several games like death match, capture the flag, king of the hill etc. you can play these games against up to 5 other people. This is quite a fun feature as none of the other GTA games had this feature and is currently unique to this version. You can also play the game in multiplayer mode but this would probably be more fun with more people.

Disadvantages
The game freezes slightly when you get in and out of vehicles, not a major problem but slightly annoying.
There doesn't seem to be a great amount of storyline, compared to other GTA Games
The missions seem have gone back to the GTA 3 and seem quite 1 dimensional.
Camera control not great.

Advantages
Grand theft auto in the palm of your hands.
They have managed to cram the whole GTA 3 map in.
Not many loading screens.
Extra multiplayer games (you can play against each other via wi-fi)

Overall this is a great game and if you are a fan of the Grand Theft Auto Series I recommend you buy this game. It is fun to play and rewarding.

A good concise review, that gives the consumer enough information in order to judge whether to purchase the product or not! Likewise, I can't believe how much they've fitted into the game. Easily an essential purchase for any PSP owner. Alboy
