Batman reborn for an adult audience
Review of Batman: Dark Knight Returns (Batman) - Frank Miller by
Timbo3107
Advantages: Never ever has there been a Batman this violent
Disadvantages: It will take ages to read this all the way through.
The Dark Knight Returns graphic novel is really the Holy Grail of comic books as this stirred up the Batman legacy in such a sufficient manner that it changed to an extent it is what it is today. At the time of its release in February 1986 the sales of the Batman comic started to dwindle, the movies were not even released and the only time Batman was seen was if cartoons and shows were re-run on TV which was damaging the sales potential of the Batman ... ...whole as this was really the first time that a graphic novel had departed from the normal passage of a character and gone off on a completely new tangent, telling a story that for the mid-eighties had an awful amount of violence and involved 13 year old characters who would accompany Batman as his sidekick Robin. The story revolves around a totally different world than what we are used to, gone is the clean cities and bright colours to be replaced ...

Fantastic
Review of Sin City: That Yellow Bastard - Frank Miller by
middleton28
Advantages: Incredible art work
Disadvantages: Overlong
Anyone familiar to Frank Miller's Sin City series of graphic novels will already know just how good it is. Those of you that first caught Sin City in the film version have not yet seen the best version out there.
Yes, while most of the shots in the film are taken from the graphic novels directly (in fact, the books were used as storyboards), there was something lacking from the film. A certain sense of humour that seemed to make jokes of the characters ... ...the original books, who loved Sin City for its twisted take on the criminal underworlds of 40s noir film-making. All of you that saw the film and enjoyed it in any way (even if you just liked the nice colour bits!) should pick up the books (seven in total), and revel in what they were intended to be.
That Yellow Bastard is the 4th of the book, but the 1st in the Sin City chronology. There will be no spoilers here, but search for this book anywhere ...

Jingle Bells, Batman smells, Robin flew away.
Review of Batman: the Dark Knight Returns - Frank Miller by
DoctorNemesis
Advantages: Offers a superb glimpse into a world that doesn't need heroes.
Disadvantages: None in itself, but it's responsible for all the angsty superhero comics that followed.
One of the most frequently recommended comic books of recent years, Frank Miller's 'The Dark Knight Returns' was the book that made comics edgy again. Unfortunately it's also responsible for virtually every comic writer thinking that their own creations needed to have a dark and edgy side, but I won't hold that against him. The book takes place in a world where all the world's heros and superheroes have disappeared from public view. As you might ... ...the previously retired Batman's return to active duty. Sounds a like a cue for a lot of 'Blam! 'Ker-Pows' and 'Kazam's, right? Wrong.
You see, the book is entirely focused upon Batman himself. It also shows how his actions effect the world he's living in. And it raises the question of just how good, or bad, Batman is for the world. I was pleasantly surprised to find that Frank Miller, who not only wrote the book but drew the superbly angular artwork, ...

SIN CITY
Review of Sin City - Frank Miller by
Paul32
Advantages: A classy tale of crime and retribution
Disadvantages: Oh ok it IS a comic book
...who reads this.
The Sin City series first ran for thirteen months in ‘Dark Horse Presents’ a monthly anthology comic. The author/artist has worked on Batman: The Dark Knight, Robocop and Daredevil and he is highly acclaimed in his field. He is currently directing a film version of his work with Robert Rodriguez (From Dusk til Dawn, The Faculty, Once Upon a time in Mexico, Desperado) starring the likes of Elijah Wood, Brittany Murphy, Bruce Willis, ... ...knowledgeable at dinner parties!
Sin City is a dark rain filled hole of a town full of clip joints and wino’s, with everyone in authority being corrupt and trigger happy, and most of the residents choosing to throw themselves on the rocks of their Jack Daniels or lose themselves for a moment in cheap sweaty sex. The men are big and mean and the women are beautiful and bad. The style of writing and artistry is homage to American pulp fiction writing, ...

Give Me liberty - An American Dream
Review of Give Me Liberty - Frank Miller by
TimothyC
Advantages: Excellent story and good artwork
Disadvantages: None that I can think of
This is one of those books that a saw the name on the cover Frank Miller and Dave Gibbons and went I must buy that as I had enjoyed there other work separately, but together I thought that it would be excellent and I was correct. Again they have set this in the America of the future where the country is at war with itself and others. The story is set around Martha Washington a coloured girl who joins PAX the American peace force. This is unlike the ... ...does America’s dirty work around the World. The story is about her struggle to improve herself even though she has an enemy in the force that is trying to eliminate her using every means available to him. The artwork is first class and with a story to match well worth the read. ISBN number 13579108642. ...
