Review of Sin City: That Yellow Bastard - Frank Miller by
middleton28
Advantages: Incredible art work
Disadvantages: Overlong
Anyone familiar to Frank Miller's Sin City series of graphic novels will already know just how good it is. Those of you that first caught Sin City in the film version have not yet seen the best version out there.
Yes, while most of the shots in the film are taken from the graphic novels directly (in fact, the books were used as storyboards), there was something lacking from the film. A certain sense of humour that seemed to make jokes of the characters ... ...the original books, who loved Sin City for its twisted take on the criminal underworlds of 40s noir film-making. All of you that saw the film and enjoyed it in any way (even if you just liked the nice colour bits!) should pick up the books (seven in total), and revel in what they were intended to be.
That Yellow Bastard is the 4th of the book, but the 1st in the Sin City chronology. There will be no spoilers here, but search for this book anywhere ...

Sharpe is Furious!
Review of Sharpes Fury - Bernard Cornwell by
pdoyle007
Advantages: Sharpe Novel so always a leasure
Disadvantages: Disjointed feel
Sharpe's Fury is the latest in the long running series by Bernard Cornwell detailing the heroics and exploits of Richard Sharpe, a common soldier during the Penninsular War whose skill in battle leads to promotion and a different set of problems battling against the class system of the British military.
The novel was released last summer (august '06) and is the 21st book in the series (I think this makes Sharpe one of the longest running characters ... ...know how popular the books (and later TV series) would be the stories were originally chronological, although in the last decade or so he has begun to fill in the gaps between these, hence this is the latest novel however chronologically the 11th story.
The book is set in 1811 and reflects the Battle of Barossa in Spain. At this point in the War France is dominating with allied troops reduced to two small holdings in Portugal (Lisbon) and Spain ...

Lighting the Night Sky
Review of Starman: Sins of the Father - James Robinson by
mortimus
Advantages: This is GREAT stuff
Disadvantages: You will want to buy the rest
...his children…
Thus opens Starman: Sins of the Father by James Robinson one of the most original redefinitions of a super hero done in a long time. This graphic novel is an excellent introduction to a set of characters that are incredibly real, unlike some of the airbrushed caricatures you see around the local comic shop.
The Cast
Jack Knight: The hero of the tale. A young man at odds with his father and his legacy in a big way. He doesn’t want ... ...this Graphic Novel up.
Starman: Sins of the Father when I first encountered it eight years ago was a wonder for me. It was a time
when a lot of junk was coming onto the comics market. What this had that other comics didn’t was a rich history to grow from. This history is never seen it is there as hidden depth that is only hinted at as the story progresses.
The graphic novel is of course how Jack becomes Starman. It shows his gradual realisation ...

Review of Starship Troopers - Warren Ellis by
DiazX
Advantages: Good fun
Disadvantages: Movie cash in
...one in a part of the comic industry which is littered with bad ones. The artwork throughout is very graphic and I wouldn’t recommend it for preteens but past that it’s surprisingly good fun.
Starship Troopers is published by Dark Horse Comics; ISBN: 1569713146 and costs $13.56 @amazon.com ...

Star Whores
Review of Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi: The Fall of the Sith Empire - Kevin J. Anderson by
DiazX
Advantages: Nice cover
Disadvantages: peurile rubbish
...it is part of the Star Wars licence. I’m ashamed to admit it but that was one of the reasons I picked this up, the other reason was it has a pretty cover, in fact Duncan Fegredos cover and Kristen Burdas graphic design for the collection are really the only strong points to speak of. The cover has a strange Aztec/Mayan feel to it which is reflected in the introductory pages and the gallery in the last few pages.
The story written by Kevin ... ...published a series of Star Wars novels in the past which were similarly weak but at least they had the scope of a novel with which to work out story arcs instead of relying on artwork to carry the plot. The collection is set long before the events which take place in any of the Star Wars films, which doesn’t excuse the fact most of the characters are wandering around in shiny armour, if a culture has invented space travel then surely the will ...
