Value for money high end GL card
Advantages: Goog Stable OpenGL card Disadvantages: Not got all top end features
This 3Dlabs card is the latest Opengl based card that I've purchased for running 3D and 2D professional applcations with. My area of interest is 3D animation, and then adding this to live action footage. Software I use includes Maya, Softimage XSI, Combustion, After Effects and Premiere.
This card performs well. For the money it has a very high spec and sits in the middle of the Wildcat VP range. However, the next two cards up only really have AGP ... ...mainly down to the excellent 3Dlabs drivers that come supplied with the card. All the major 3D and 2D apps are supported, and updates appear almost as soon as a new software release becomes available.
If you want rock solid reliability, go for a proper OpenGL card. And if you want a company that only makes cards for this market, and hence cater to all the needs here, you pretty much can only gor for 3Dlabs these days. Nvidia and ati make game cards, ...

XFX 8800GTX review
Advantages: Bargain, good performance Disadvantages: None
...without any problems with this card, and so far I don't have anything to complain about. It was easy to install, plus the support from XFX is pretty good too (I went to them to see where I could get updated drivers) so all in all, I'm happy :) ...

Superb card and great value for money
Advantages: Good upgrade from 8800gt, better fps, slighty better graphics Disadvantages: Overheating is somtimes a problem for crashing and freezing the game but good fans should solve th
I purchased this card when I upgraded from my 8800gt, I didnt think there was going to be much of an improvement from the 8800gt but i was surprised, my games ran at around an extra 15fps .and graphics looked slightly better and when running on DX-10 seemed even smoother then the 8800gt.
The only downside is the card gets hot (fast).. especially when running power intensive games such as Crysis or call of duty 4 which cause the game to somtimes ...

Gainward GTX260 Golden Sample
Advantages: Powerful Fast Good Value Disadvantages: Noisey
I couldn't be happier with this card. I got it to replace my old 7950 and the difference, as expected, is night and day. Previously I could run most new games only in medium or low settings, and even then only at about 30fps. With this beast I can crank all of the settings for Fallout 3, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Mass Effect, Oblivion (etc etc) to maximum without any obvious slowdown. With the latest Nvidia drivers, I've seen no graphical glitches and ... ...and as others have mentioned, yes this card is very big. I had to remove a case fan to fit it in to my Antec Sonata case (luckily the fan was disabled anyway), so bear that in mind if you're considering buying it. As a welcome ancillary point, the card runs very quietly - quieter, in fact, than the custom 'Quiet' fan I bought to fit on my old GPU, and that's at standard settings on the stock fan. All in all, a wonderful card for the price. I couldn't ...

Powercolor HD4850
Advantages: good performance, keeps relatively cool Disadvantages: it's not the 5770
Well, when building my gaming rig a year ago I came across a problem, I needed a graphics card and only had £100 to spend... The 4870 was still £150 and I saw one of these going on an auction site just under budget, "nice" I thought and bought it. The Catalyst drivers were pretty easy to install (though I had to update to the latest version to get a second desktop running, and ATi's catalyst program isn't recommended for those that are new to computing) ... ...the time I'd got all the other equopment It was out of it's 30 days' warranty), I ran it with my case side open and found that the fan never span on it (Turns out the motor had burnt out from some idiot overclocking it) so I fitted a third party cooler and she runs like a dream now. I can watch full HD on a 32" TV I have, and have a 2nd desktop on another monitor in full HD with no problems at all I've played Red Alert 3 on full settings with no ...
