###### UPDATE 11/10/02 ######
The next installment: Green Flag took the van away to a garage (yesterday afternoon) for an estimate on repair costs. They explained that it was too late to have a thorough look at it so they would do it in the morning. (If they hadn't messed about so long it wouldn't have been too late).
Pete is now stuck in the house (which is in the middle of nowhere!) with no food or drink (ok, there's apples on the tree in the garden and water in the tap!). He has a dead mobile phone battery, no way of charging up his phone (as he was using the vans cigarette lighter), and we have no land line in the house, so he can't even phone for a taxi. GF know all this but won't let him have a hire car until they know if he's going to get the car repaired!
So, this morning we find out that the garage need to take out the engine (2.5 hours work) before they can give a quote but they think it's going to cost more than the value of the van. GF will only pay the first £100 towards the cost (and we have already given them £75 of it!!) and have now refused to ship the van back to the UK because it will cost more than the van is worth???
Loss of vehicle use If your car is not roadworthy you can choose one of the following options:
c). Car Hire - up to £850 You are covered for costs up to £850 for the hire of an alternative vehicle OR extra accommodation costs - limit £225 per person. Additional accommodation costs to £45 per person per day.
This apparently doesn't count unless you have the car repaired there so he would have to pay out over £900 just to get free car hire which would be about £150. It would probably also apply to having an accident - if you right the car off they won't give you a hire car as you wouldn't be having it repaired!
Pete decided he would have the van back to the house and leave it in the barn so he could come back and fix it another time. Now, they have agreed that he will need a car to get back to the ferry and have arranged for a taxi to pick him up and take him to the car hire place (an hour away) and to drop it off at the ferry.
I have had to take messages for him (as his phone is dead) and have spoken to the lady who is arranging the car hire. She is lovely!! This is apparently another department of GF. What a difference, lol.
So apart from the cock up with the policy, one very rude and unhelpful operator, the things they don't tell you before you begin your journey and the small print (which gets them out of almost anything!), they are at least going to get my hunny safely back to me :o)
I must say, this part of the rescue has almost redeemed them - I said ALMOST!
This may be a little harsh because I'm still fuming!!
My partner and I bought a house in France in February and, knowing that we would be driving backwards and forwards for at least a year, wanted a yearly policy.
I got on the net and began my search and out of the various options Green Flag seemed the best for price and cover. This is taken from the page I booked on:

I thought 'Great!'. So I booked with them, no problems, and before we travel we feel it's safer just to give them a ring and check that everything's in place. We haven't needed to use it so far this year but Pete (my partner) still made sure he checked before he left last week, and was told "yes, everything is in order, all you will need is your policy number and this telephone number: 00800 4000 6000". Perfect! (or was it?).
Unfortunately, Pete broke down yesterday but not to worry, he has the policy number on him....he phoned them up, gave the details and...."I'm sorry, that policy number doesn't exist" WHAT???
He gave them his address, post code, number plate, date we took out the policy, how much we paid (which she said wasn't possible, it would cost at least £100) then he gave them my name and number plate..."oh yes, we have that name but the policy expired 3 years ago" HUH??? I've never been with Green Flag until this year!!
"Basically, unless you can prove to us that you have a current policy, or you can give us the name of the person you spoke to, we can't help you". GGGRRRRR!!
After phoning me to sort it out this end (UK), only to find I was out (awww bless his heart!), he had to do a make shift fix it job himself and poodle home (45 miles) at about 10 mph.
So, this morning I get the full story from a very unhappy bunny and ring up GF to find out what's going on. I phoned up, gave all the details and get the same response...doesn't exist. The woman I spoke to said she remembered dealing with the phone call yesterday and there was nothing she could do.
"where did you book it?" she asked. "online at Green Flag" was my reply. "well that proves it doesn't exist as you can only book it through DirectLine or (somewhere else, sorry can't remember!), Green Flag don't have a website". Just shows how little she knows about her job...I took the above details, and booked my policy, from www.greenflag.com !!
She went away and came back a few times - me still insisting we are covered and her still insisting I was wrong - until after 5 or 6 mins on hold, she finally says "I've managed to trace your details. You have a temporary holiday travel policy, not a full membership policy" *steam coming from my ears* I said calmly "you're not very well organised" but instead of an apology I got told off for not calling it by it's proper name!
I know it's unfair to judge a company by one operator but wouldn't you be annoyed? As it stands now, they are dealing with it. I can't tell you the outcome as it's still going on but I will update this op (or moan!) when I know more.
Meanwhile, if you're off on holiday and you rely on GF, just make sure you know where and how you booked your policy, EXACTLY what it is called, who you spoke to and what colour underwear they were wearing at the time!! Happy travelling :o)
Advantages: GF very quick Disadvantages: none really
Having used the RAC and Green Flag over recent years, I have no hesitation in recommending Green Flag. Also as an ex employee of Green Flag, I know the company quite well.
Both companies offer various rates of cover from about £40 up to about £130 from basic breakdown cover to services such as European / caravan cover. Also they offer other services but I am going to talk about the car breakdown service I have recieved from the 2 companies.
My ... ...netted me a tenner with Green Flag) and had a look, decided my battery was flat, he poked about but said it was that. 2 days later, the battery went flat again, they came out (again another hour) and gave me a jump start and told me to visit the local garage to get a new battery, fair enough. As the RAC only seem to have a certain number of agents in one area, they need to fix jobs asap, which imo, could lead to them fobbing you off to get the job ...

Advantages: get to you quickly Disadvantages: none
The Green Flag, isn't like the AA and RAC, they haven't got their own vans, and in theory they are not a organsisation. The Green Flag works with local garages, when you phone for assistance, the control centre, takes your details, contacts the nearest garage to you, and from there the mechanic comes and assists you. The responce times are good, and they normally get to you in twenty minutes, I have never had to wait for more than forty minutes. ... ...the road. The Green Flag offer a great service, if they can't fix your car they will either tow it home or to a local garage, and even if you break down at your home address they will come round to you. They also offer other benefits such as cover when going abroad. At the moment I'm not with Green Flag, but when I was, it cost me about £5.99 a month, which I feel is a reasonable price for the level of cover provided. If you have a new car, I wouldn't ...

...down the motorway, we joined Green Flag through Churchill Insurance. Thank god we did!
The oil pump went on our car, and as we were nearly there we carried on going, oblivious to the trouble and damage we were causing. To be honest, we thought we were out of water or oil or something else and that was why it was overheating. Anyway, we were wrong.
As it happens, we got to the in-laws just as the engine started to make horrible loud noises, and ... ...the M27. I rang Green Flag and was told there would be someone with us in 20 mintues as we were on the motorway and had two small children with us. They actually arrived after 3/4 of an hour. After determing that poor car would not drive another inch, the chap then decided to call another vehicle out to tow us off the motorway. Thsi took another half hour to arrive, by which point both babies were awake and none too amused.
After being towed off ...

Advantages: Reasonable, efficient, friendly Disadvantages: Calls cost a lot.
Can you believe a Green Flag guy came out and didn't give me grief about having to change a tyre?
Well, this is why I love Green Flag.
I am a member through my mothers Green Flag family membership and have had to call them out 3 times.
Green Flag uses local garages, and unlike the AA and RAC, do not have vans of their own.
I can only presume that they really check up on these garages before they let them join because on the three times I have ... ...and I would highly recommend Green Flag. Obviously, in other areas the guys may not be as friendly but I haven't experienced them.
The only thing I would say is that to call the freefone number from a mobile is expensive (It cost me about £4 on a pay and go phone)
Apart from that, they are reasonable (About £30 per month for a whole family) and efficient. ...

...of mine told me about Green Flag. I'd never heard of them as I don't drive, but I read up on them and persuaded my husband to take their breakdown cover.
In the past year we have called them out on numerous occasions to different problems, and have never been disappointed with the service.
A breakdown mechanic is always out within the hour and that's no mean feat when we live in a village about 10 miles from the nearest big town!
On one occasion ... ...My husband works 45 minutes from home and was brought back by Green Flag when he broke down near his work.
Green Flag are cheaper than their rivals, but cutting the cost has not meant cutting the service.
I know we'll be with them for some time to come. ...

Advantages: Low Price Disadvantages: No service, cannot get through to customer service, information incorrect after 3 attempts
After 12 years with Direct Line, I changed to Privilege, same company, cheaper price. My wife had a no fault accident, tried to speak to someone on a mobile phone following the accident, constantly being passed around, left for over four and a half hours on the side of the road waiting for the car to be recovered. The phone bill exceeded £7.00, problems getting through to customer services, as per other reviewer's comment's, kept being passed around each passing the buck.
Three weeks later, still waiting for a response to my complaint letter. Be advised the company also is part of the Direct Line and GreenFlag group. If they agree for the vehicle to be recovered it will be GreenFlag, if you try to contact customer services, you sit in Direct Lines insurance quotation queue and pay for it. The company has also been informed on three ...
Advantages: May have a reasonable recovery service, but I've never had to use it Disadvantages: Eager to get your money, dishonest, don't honour agreements.
The AA - I think they are crooks.
After phoning me lots of times to encourage me to renew membership some 4 weeks before it expired, I finally negotiated a new renewal price. They then took my money 9 days before renewal was due, and overcharged me by £50. Having got my money, it was then almost impossible to contact them, and I had to phone about 10 times before I finally got someone to investigate. They obviously didn't believe my story, but I was able to give exact times of my call, and the name of the person I spoke to. After some deliberations they agreed to refund the £50 right away, but 4 days later they have not done so. I'm now writing to Trading Standards to complain. My advice - ditch the AA and go with GreenFlag or one of the other car recovery companies. I think the AA are in financial difficulties and are only interested ...

Advantages: none at all Disadvantages: Somebody has to pay commision to Direct Line
Direct Line this, direct line that. I anticipate they have a hidden agenda.....to rule the World.
O. K. So I have thrown a tantrum. They did do something for the car insurance market but at a price to us all. Unless you fit exactly the criteria set fro each company by its actuaries you probab;ly will not get a quote but instead have to trawl the secondary market and pay a hefty price to boot. You do not have to be a bad risk to fall in this category its just that they do not want your business. The chap who started the idea of course made an absolute fortune for which he has yet to thank us all properly.
Now they think they can claim to be providers of a rescue service. Of course they are not and have only climbed on the back of GreenFlag. Silly Greenflag probably think they have done well but I bet statistics show otherwise ...
