Having used the RAC and Green Flag over recent years, I have no hesitation in recommending Green Flag. Also as an ex employee of Green Flag, I know the company quite well.
Both companies offer various rates of cover from about £40 up to about £130 from basic breakdown cover to services such as European / caravan cover. Also they offer other services but I am going to talk about the car breakdown service I have recieved from the 2 companies.
My old Peugout(sp) was on its last legs and so breakdown cover was a necessity. Whilst with the RAC, I needed 3 breakdown calls, which meant my no claims bonus which they offer ( to deter flat tyre / flat battery / other waste of time calls) went out of the window. The guy came after about an hour (which would have netted me a tenner with Green Flag) and had a look, decided my battery was flat, he poked about but said it was that.
2 days later, the battery went flat again, they came out (again another hour) and gave me a jump start and told me to visit the local garage to get a new battery, fair enough.
As the RAC only seem to have a certain number of agents in one area, they need to fix jobs asap, which imo, could lead to them fobbing you off to get the job done quick to get .
However they classed this as 2 visits (to fix one problem) so I had to moan at the customer service to reduce this as RAC only allow a certain number of breakdown calls per year.
On joining Green Flag a few years back I had a few more breakdowns, a bit more serious but on both times, their agents were there within half an hour. I say agents as they use local garages to do their servicing. The problems couldn't be fixed onsite but they were more than willing to tow my car then (it was late at night), or at any other time, so they picked me up the next day, took my car to the garage of my choice and dropped me off at work!!!
I know from colleagues that their Euro service is first class and worth having for piece of mind.
I'm not saying that the RAC are bad, just that Green Flag are, in my experiences a lot better. Both companies Customer service is in general very good.

Advantages: May have a reasonable recovery service, but I've never had to use it Disadvantages: Eager to get your money, dishonest, don't honour agreements.
