A review on Green and Black's Butterscotch Milk Chocolate 100g bar.
I decided to walk along the supermarket chocolate aisle and test out my resolve to not buy any chocolate this week. I was doing well until by some cruel twist of fate they had decided to put an offer on the Green and Black's chocolate bars. My mistake was in stopping to look at the different flavours and then having the overwhelming desire to try their Butterscotch.
A Few Facts
+ Green and Blacks were set up to give financial support to the Mayan Indians by purchasing cocoa from the Belize Jungle. + They were taken over by Cadbury Schweppes in 2005 but retain a certain amount of independence as well as keeping their founder as Chairman. + The company is based in London and the chocolate made in Northern Italy. + The chocolate meets the Soil Association's standars for organic food and farming. + There are thirteen different flavours available including almond, apricot, ginger, mint and cherry. They also produce limited edition bars, one being caramel. A full list is on their website. + These bars are suitable for Vegetarians. + The bar contains 34% cocoa
ALLERGY ALERT - The bar is manufactured in a factory that handles nut and cereal ingredients. Although this bar does not contain nuts it does contain wheat and milk powder.
Packaging
The packaging is the same as the picture, so I wont go into too much detail. The outer wrapper is best described as glossy paper. The Soil Association mark is on the front and useful information about the product on the back. The inside of the wrapper has details of a link to the Soil Association and an offer if you join them, of a free book and 3 chocolate bars. The chocolate itself is in a gold coloured foil wrapper (silver on the inside) with Green & Blacks Organic written on it.
This 100g bar is 15cm x 7cm x 0.8cm and divided into 30 pieces (more chance to limit my intake!) by a shallow ridge. Each piece has their organic symbol indented on it. On opening the foil wrapper I could detect a faint smell of milk chocolate. I thought the chocolate itself would be darker , but it is only very slightly darker than other milk chocolate bars. I broke off a strip of three pieces and could see the little chunks of butterscotch inside.
The Taste
The first individual piece I sucked and got the delicious mixed flavours of milk chocolate and mild butterscotch. The milk chocolate is smooth, rich and creamy. The butterscotch is crunchy (I didn't suck that) and tastes of buttery toffee with that distinctive butterscotch flavour. The second piece I crunched up, but I don't think you get to appreciate the delicious chocolate flavour that way. It doesn't last as long either, so I sucked the third piece. This is a chocolate bar to savour, so I didn't eat it in one go, even though it is moreish like the wrapper says! It has just the right amount of crunchy butterscotch pieces. The taste left ingering at the back of your throat is mainly of the delicious chocolate with just a hint of the butterscotch. Although the sugar content is quite high it doesn't seem that sweet.
Would I recommend it? This is a good quality, organic bar of chocolate with just the right balance of flavours. So, yes I would recommend it. It is chocolate that is worth paying extra for.
Price I bought it on offer in Morrisons for £1.00, though I think these bars usually sell at about £!.80. I have seen them at Tesco's, so they're probably available at other supermarkets.

Advantages: Generous amounts of butterscotch evenly distributed Disadvantages: Chocolate a little too rich
==Green and Black's==
Green and Black's started in 1991 with dark chocolate 70% cocoa made with organic cocoa beans. In 1994 they added the Maya Gold bar to the collection and agreed to pay farmers a fair price for their cocoa, earning Green and Black's the first fairtrade mark in the UK. They produce ethically sourced and organic chocolate with a rich intense flavour which is now their trademark.

I love Green and Black's milk chocolate, and I love all things butterscotch. So when I was given a box of the miniature selection for a gift I couldn't wait to get straight in and try the butterscotch bar first.
I always think the wrappers make the chocolate so inviting, the rich coloured brown paper looks luxurious and on the butterscotch bar the top section of the paper is coloured a bright yellow which contrasts with ...

Advantages: Good butterscotch flavour Disadvantages: Not the greatest chocolate
Buying Green and Black's chocolate is good for the soul, good for the environment and good for the cocoa farmers. It's not, however, very good for the pocket...and I don't mean leaving a bar in yer pooch to melt into a gooey, pooey mush giving the appearance of a sudden onslaught of incontinence, although that's certainly not good for your pocket. No. I mean it's a bit on the pricey side.
Still, I was given a pack of Green & Black mini bars at Christmas ... ...12 x 15g bars.
Green & Black's chocolate bars are organic, but then pedantically, isn't all chocolate? Unless, even more pedantically, you consider that man-made is an antonym of organic and I'm pretty sure most chocolate is man-made...or woman-made. Let's stop splitting hairs and get on, shall we? Yes, let's. So anyway, I've munched my way through the various bars but I have to say, that the butterscotch variety was probably my favourite. But then, ...

About Green & Blacks
The name Green and Black actually comes from 'green for organic' and black for 'dark, rich colour of the chocolate'. Green and Blacks is based in London and is owned by Cadbury Schweppes. The Chocolate Bar
The bar I am reviewing is a 100g bar which is about 6 inches by 3 inches. In total there are 30 pieces of chocolate in the bar and each piece has the Green and Blacks organic symbol on it. The chocolate bar is obviously a dark brown colour and you can see the pieces of butterscotch inside.

Advantages: Smooth taste, lovely flavour, good match between chocolate intensity and flavouring Disadvantages: Weight-for-weight, expensive compared to bigger brands
I've been into Green and Blacks' for about five years now (maybe a little longer) and although I still like Cadbury's chocolate, if you gave me the choice between the better known purple packaging and this rather sophisticated, gold and earthy cocoa brown wrapper with the foil-wrapped chocolate inside, I would take it every time. Maybe it's because this is organic (and let's face it, many people view this area of the market with suspicion, a clever ... ...like, though.) I think Green and Black's must do a good bit of experimenting with their chocolate and filling/addition combinations because I've tried their white chocolate, and their 70% cocoa solids dark chocolate as well as the milk and they really picked the right chocolate intensity when they paired these crunchy butterscotch bits with the milk chocolate. The bars are generally quite thin, marked out into chunks (the fondant or caramel filled ...
