Now that we are in the boom of digital technology and now digital television, in order to view these new fee channels, you're going to have to get yourself a tuner.
There are many styles/makes to choose from and they basically do the same thing which is to be able to pick up and display digital TV programs on to your normal television.
There is no need to buy a super dooper TV to get great channels, just buy one this tuner.
Price -------
Mine was £100 But depends on where you purchase it from. They have dropped in price dramatically over the past six months so you may find yourself a bargain if you look hard enough.
If the brick-like design of this GDT-1000 isn't to your taste, Grundig have another upgraded model on the market, the GDT-1500. It is slightly larger in size but is curvier and looks modern. However this is reflected in the price.
Remote Control ---------------------- If your button mad like me then your going to want to know the feel of the buttons! It has been designed with a curve so it sits snugly in your hand. The button-layout is unchallenging and you've got all the buttons in the right places. See the picture below for a look!
On screen display -------------------------
All digital tuners have different screen layouts. Digital terrestrial has what's called and an open MHEG architecture, which basically means that a brand of tuner can design and add whatever it likes with the on screen displays.
Most of the new tuners like Grundig's GDT1000 has a built in TV guide.
It is accessible by pressing the TV-G button on the remote control.
It opens up on the screen a detailed guide to what's currently available for you to watch.
It also has a small part of the screen which is the channel that you are currently looking at so you can see if you like the look at the program.
If you don't then you can scroll through the TV guide by using the directional buttons in the middle of the remote control. The window will changes to reflect the highlighted channel.
There's also the familiar 'Now & Next' on screen overlay for instant access programme information.
Installation -----------------
The initial installation is simple, straightforward and very easy. Plug your box into the TV by a scart lead (a lead that you would connect the TV to the DVD or video)
To tune into the available TV channels, you need to choose the menu option on the screen and choose automatic installation. This can take up to 10 - 20 minutes.
The box does all the hard work, by finding the channels for you and automatically storing them.
Customizing -------------------
You can prepare your own favourites channel list, by selecting which channels you will most often be viewing. This can be changed at any time.
The set-up menu also allows you to specify the aspect ratio of your TV, which in simple terms means that you can select the viewing size of the TV channels.
Those with standard 4:3 television models, select "letterboxed" for standard viewing or "centre-cut" for wide screen broadcasts and any movies you will be watching. I find it best to view the channels on different settings before choosing. It's very easy to change it.
If you have small children, you may wish to look at the parental lock-out feature, which prevents children viewing certain channels. You have to set a pin number for any channels you do not wish your children to view.
Display Quality ----------------------
I think this depends on the TV you have.
If you get a sharp good image at the moment then you should get the same quality image with this tuner.
I have had no problems with the quality of the pictures I get.
One problem I have had and sometimes get is that the signal strength for some channels occasionally is weak and so the picture is "blocky" and jumps and the sound skips. To improve this you can get a Ariel booster.
Channels --------------- Depending on the area that you live, with this tuner you should have free to view access to these channels
BBC1 BBC2 BBC3 BBC4 CBBC's -Children's Channel BBC News 24 ITV1 ITV2 ITV NEWS THE HISTORY CHANNEL FTN QVC - Home Shopping Channel BID UP TV SKY NEWS SKY SPORTS NEWS THE HITS - Music Video Channel VHF - Music Video Channel Sky Travel - Holiday Program FOUR TEXT - DIGITAL TELETEXT BBCI - BBC INTERACTIVE
Radio 1 Radio 2 Radio 3 Radio 4 Radio 5 live Radio 1 Extra Smash Hits Mojo Kerrang
and many others!! It really depends which area you live in
Instructions ------------------
This Grundig GDT 1000 comes with a instruction handbook which is very easy to read and simple to follow. It contains screen images to help you set up your tuner and customise it the way you want it to.
Value for money ----------------------- For a one off payment of £100 you get access to over 20 channels, which you can view day after day after day with out paying any monthly bills! Exceptional value!

Can Top-up TV be used with this one? Ours does not take it. We are looking for a new one.

What an expensive one! It's just an additional information from me; here in Indonesia, we don't buy branded digital TV receivers as we have observed that they give the same quality of signals.
If you are interested in adding more channels, you could visit : www.linksat.com or www.lynksat.com.
