Almost everyone has had some contact with digital television, whether it be directly or indirectly through the likes of Sky, NTL, Telewest or the late ITV Digital.
However, FREEVIEW is the latest development for the market, and seems to be quite a good deal.
I recently went into Currys and bought the Grundig GDT 1500 model digital receiver - I bought it for the kitchen, as we already have Sky in the lounge and I am really pleased with it.
The reveiver is silver, comes with a remote control, but no scart lead (which you need). I paid £79.99 for the reveiver itself, and £9.99 for a clever 'digital eye' to go with it (This means that you can hide the receiver behind the TV, and just have the 'digital eye' showing, in order for the remote control to operate the receiver. (A clever, priceless little gadget!)
If you want a scart lead at Currys, they are £12.99 - (the going rate in other places is about £3-£5!)
What does the Box do? ===================== Well, the box is quite clever - it allows you to pick up digital channels from your television, without the need for a satellite dish. - It does it through your present arial. You do not need an IDTV - (Integrated digital Television!)
The box therefore is a decoder/adapter - receiving digital transmissions from service providers and showing them on your screen.
What channels does it provide? ============================== In addition to receiving BBC 1, BBC 2, ITV 1, Channel 4 and Channel 5 through the Freeview box (and therefore digital sound and picture quality) there are many other channels you get...
There are more channels to follow soon, and radio stations can also be picked up. In total, you receive over 50 channels.
The Cost ======== Free.
No, really! With FREEVIEW, there are no subscription costs - so all you pay is the price of the box, and that's it - FOREVER! Once you have paid this, you will receive the channels with Freeview just as you currently receive your normal television channels, -that is, you don't pay anymore!
What you need to know ==================== Firstly, you need to have your postcode checked, in order to see if your area is 'FREEVIEW ready.' you can do this online at: http://www.freeview.co.uk/canireceivefreeview/index.html
(And the smallprint is: "This prediction gives a good indication of whether you’ll be able to get Freeview. But it’s not a guarantee because it cannot allow for the exact position of your property, the type, condition or wiring of your aerial or other local factors. All these influence reception quality where you live and will need to be checked.")
Secondly, your arial needs to be strong enough. You should use an *outdoor* arial for Freeview. As long as your arial is in good condition you shouldn't have a problem. However, Freeview and the retailers tell you about the arial upgrade to cover themselves, because there's always a chance you might need it. Also, in some parts of the country Freeview signals use a different frequency or transmitter to the one you normally use for your analogue reception. This, I think is rare, however, but do check with your retailer before you buy. If you do need a new arial, the cost is approximately £70-£80
Thirdly, your television should have a scart socket (or AV inputs) as the receiver uses a scart to connect to your TV. Please also note again, that the Grundig GDT1500 does not come supplied with a scart - you need to buy it separate.
EASE OF USE ========== The Grundig GDT1500 was very easy to set up. Basically, you do the following...
1. remove the existing RF cable from the back of your TV (which comes from the wall) 2. plug it into the Grundig GDT1500 3. take a scart lead, and plug one end into the Grundig GDT1500 4. plug the other end into the TV 5. plug the Grundig GDT1500 into the power socket 6....well, there isn't really a 6!
Your television is now digital! Wow!
Channels and TV guide ==================== I would say that the only drawback of the Grundig GDT1500 is that it is sometimes slow at changing channels and often freezes when you use the TV guide (which is also a feature of Freeview).
However, I have been told by a colleague that this depends on your area; how far you are from the transmitter; and how strong your arial is. It apparently, is not unique to the Grundig GDT1500, but to all Freeview boxes.
Summary ====== Check your postcode first!! Lots of channels No subscription One-off payment for equipment (and that's it!) Buy a scart lead Buy a digital eye if you want to hide your receiver Easy to setup Easy to use Slow, and freezes at times
A THOUGHT ======== Grundig is currently going into administration, and you might pickup the GDT1500 boxes a bit cheaper! Might be worth keeping your eyes open if you want one of these!
Thank you for reading!!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ M.. ;-)
Advantages: 53 Digital Services and NO hidden fees or subscriptions Disadvantages: Slow channel changing
...this Digital Television adapter from Grundig - all you do is buy the box and plug it in. Thats it! No more!
This adapter is, at the moment, exclusively available from Dixons and their chain of stores (Curry's etc), and is currently at about £99. If you buy online at their online shop, you can knock about £10 off that price - but knowing the way technology goes - these prices will fall very quickly, very soon.
Well, now onto the good stuff! The ... ...your new lemon walls, then Grundig have a solution. For a couple of quid, you can buy an extension for the remote control that simply plugs in the back. This hides away discreetly and you can then put the box in a cupboard or shuv it down the back of the telly - out of sight!
The menus are clear and easy to read and are very simple to follow. Set up is all automatic - just a quick read of the guide and you will be up in minutes!
The box also recieves ...
