Guerlain, Paris is one of the oldest perfume houses in the world that for more than 175 years has been producing innovative and the highest quality fragrances such as L'Heure Bleue (1914), Shalimar (1925), Vetiver (1959) and Habit Rouge (1965) which are still very popular.
Their latest modern fragrance of their predecessor's kind is L'Instant (2003) which is a redefined classic of blending classic sensuality with modernity and I dare say is one of the most beautiful woody oriental fragrances on the market at the moment.
The bottle
The nice, crystalline bottle has a half-globe shape with a two-layer cylindrical stopper that nestle into each other like rose petals. The colour of the glass is metallic rose and becomes darker on the side and on the petals. The box is a similar shiny metallic mauve colour with the image of a signet pendant hanging off from the top and down the front.
The fragrance
The first notes made of sharp and tangy red fruits and woody bergamot are quite strong, almost overpowering. These first fruity accords then quickly get envelopped in a thick veil of velvety violet. The violet is very dominant in the heart; and somewhat drowns out the delicate and feminine rose and the sensual jasmin, the two components of the well-known Guerlinade.
Guerlinade is used in all the classic Guerlain perfumes as well as in many of their fragrances today. This is a signature accord of bergamot in the top, rose and jasmin and orange blossom in the heart, and tonka bean, sandal and musk in the base.
In Insolence the notes of rose and jasmin blend into the dominantly violet theme creating a rich and creamy surface on the sweet texture of sandalwood. The musky base is transparent and lets the floral heart linger on for quite a while.
Conclusion
I'm sorry to say that to me Insolence is an old-fashioned, 'smelled before' - however quality - scent marketed for the young generation(who will probably think it is something new). I recommend this product but with a warning though: if you're looking for the real Guerlain, old or new, please look elsewhere.

I came across Insolence by Guerlain from a sponsorship advert on ITV, the advert was on before after the show and twice during each set of advert breaks on each hour long episode of the programme series. After being brainwashed I thought I have to know what this fragrance smells like. I went off in search and found it in The Fragrance Shop. I got the tester and immediately fell in love with Insolence. It was so fresh and deep. I couldn’t quite figure ... ...every time I smelt it I seemed to pick out a different feel, it was sickly sweet and strong but at the same time slightly spicy. It also has a seductive feel to it. I have found that depending on the occasion it seems to change its scent. For everyday I will use a little and it comes across subtle and fresh but for a date or evening wear I use a bit more and then the strong sweet spicy seductive aroma appears. ...previously seen an advert for Guerlain Insolence. What struck me about that was that I really didn't like the name; insolence is defined as 'an arrogant, insulting or bold mode of conduct or attitude'. To me that doesn't seem anything to aspire to; perhaps they were aiming at a vaguely 'rebellious' teenage market, which would also explain why it's the sponsor for the programme Gossip Girl, which thankfully I have never had to watch. The bottle - ... ...pretty, with a glass rose shape forming the lid, which sits on the rounded bottle at a jaunty angle. I applied the perfume to my wrists by dabbing it on - the miniature bottles don't usually come with a spray action. I didn't find the perfume changed scent over time, as some do as they adjust to your skin. The scent is described as having heart notes of orange blossom and rose, top notes of violet and red berries, and base notes of iris and tonka ...

...new. I have used Guerlain perfumes in the past and liked them, so a special offer on 'Insolence' attracted me; for under £30 I got a 30ml. bottle of eau de toilette, plus a free 5ml. mini bottle. I liked the design of the bottle, which is new and different and would look good on my dressing table, I liked the name, which suggested a bold, carefree presence, and on first testing I liked the fragrance, which was warm and musky.
Unfortunately this ... ...it did not retain its initially distinctive fragrance and even a generous application soon faded. I wear perfume for my own pleasure as much as for its effect on other people, but I could soon hardly discern it. The bottle, whilst in itself an attractive accessory, was not a very practical shape to carry in a toilet bag (and I wasn't sure where to recycle it when empty)! ...
