In the 1500's, it was rather fashionable to be pale and fair like the princesses and queens. In the twenty first century, well not so much. Unfortunately for us on the milky end of the skin tone spectrum, tan is the norm. As the opening line for the television sitcom 'Sunset Tan' states, beauty is only skin deep. So as soon as I discovered this delusional obsession with burning our skins, I began to take radical measures to ensure a year round bronze skin tone. Since the ozone layer began to a thinning process and every channel on national television mentions the increasing number of victims of skin cancer (such as my own father), I gave up laying in the sun for hours and tried incessantly to find an alternative. The good old sun bed also proved itself dangerous, causing premature aging, and the spray tan, well that one produces a result that resembles a certain group midgets from Charlie and The Chocolate Factory (hint hint… think Umpa Lumpas). I was then forced to experiment with bronzing powders though I feared irregular tan lines along my face.
Before I begin describing the product, I must comment that the choice of name was not very wise. I am not very compelled to buy a beauty product that carries 'terracotta' (ceramic) anywhere along its name as it brings terrible memories of history class and the terracotta army of the Chinese emperor (and not, I do not want to resemble a sculpture). Putting this aside, the product actually proved itself wonderful. The color number ten is a bit dark, but if mixed with right palette produces a healthy tan look. The essence of this powder is to accentuate the tan slightly visible in the skin, so it will obviously tan accordingly to your natural color (don't expect miracles). The quality of the powder is excellent as I have been using for years without a single allergic reaction. The smell is not unpleasant which is important for any beauty product. The durability is also notable as this bronzing powder usually lasts all day without sweating off, even during hot summer days.
It is very important to layer your tan, instead of only highlighting cheekbones, in order to produce a smooth combination of colors. The choice of correct foundation is important as well as finishing touch to enhance the Guerlain terracotta bronzer. Also, if you do not have the proper brushes or do not know how to apply bronzer, do not buy this product. It is not an easy to use bronzing powder and requires previous knowledge to actually look presentable. If you feel you are skilled, the bronzer may result in a natural looking glow. The product is not easily removed and generally needs the aid of a make up remover.
Although I did like this product, there is a better option available within the Guerlain terracotta range. A better investment would be in the Terracotta Light, sheer bronzing powder that includes a range of 5 tones mixed in one compact. Also, this powder combines both matt and pearly definition which produces a much more effective and glowing tan. Another suggestion is the MAC iridescent pressed powder which not only tans, but leaves a goldish glow on the cheeks. The MAC option is also a favorite of professional make up artists and is known to cause the shimmering effect seen in model photo shoots.
Prices- I have a seen a large variation on prices but the range would be between 25 pounds and 35 pounds. This is quite a bit for a bronzer (10 g package), so I would not recommend this product unless you are very skilled with make up layering.
Advantages: Gives a great glow Disadvantages: Price
The packaging of this product is great. The powder is quite thick and the colour is great providing that you get the correct colour for your skin tone, and also that you dont cake it on!! The texture of the powder is great, not shimmery and it feels great. My first impressions were good and i loved the mirror in the compact. If you apply it correctly and not heavily, it can give you a real radiant glow, but dont go overboard or you'll end up looking ...
