Hi there and welcome to my review on a wonderful book named Guess How Much I Love You. This is specifically the Jigsaw Puzzle Book.
I discovered this book a few years ago at a christening in Pontefract. It was a fairly low key service conducted by the most odd female vicar. As part of her service, she read a story to the children present in the room. That story was Guess How Much I Love You. Since that day, we have been in love with this particular book and never tire of it.
Guess how much I Love You is written by Sam McBratney. In his very own words, Sam spent his time - post war - "in short trousers and Fair Isle jumpers". Sam can remember studying intensely for his eleven plus examination before proceeding to go through grammar school and on to study - at Trinity College in Dublin - History and Political Science.
In his adult years, Sam became a teacher, teaching in a further education college, grammer school and also in primary schools. Sam decided to take early retirement from his role as a teacher to concentrate on his love of writing. It is this career change that brought about this wonderful book that so many of us still love to this day.
Sam McBratney has over time went on to win many many awards for his childrens books. He is most definately best known for Guess How Much I Love You and it was this very book that was shortlisted for the 1994 Kurt Maschler award. It is one of the worlds best ever selling picture books. Sam is married with three grown-up children and a teenage tortoise, and lives in County Antrim, Northern Ireland.
The book is illustrated beautifully by Anita Jeram. In 2004, Sam McBratney teamed up once again with illustrator Anita Jeram to produce the follow up title to Guess How Much I Love You, entitled Your All My Favourites. This too was an instant hit.
Anita Jeram was born in Portsmouth in 1965. Illustration of books was not her firt job. Anita in fact worked in a wide variety of jobs from factories to kennels before settling on a career in childrens book illustration. Anite completed a foundation course in visual studies at Manchester Poly before doing a second degree in Illustration. The first book that Anita worked on - Bill's Belly Button - was published just a year after she graduated. Illustrating Guess How Much I Love You was a labour of love, she says. "Every time I read this book, I want to cry. The story reminds me so much of my own son, who often plays this kind of game with when it's time for bed."
Anita is happily married to a palaeontologist ( someone who studies prehistoric life forms on earth through the examination of plant and animal fossils ) and has three beautiful children along with a menagerie of animals. This includes cats, dogs, rabbits, toads, lizards, snakes and tortoise ! She resides in Northern Ireland and she aspires to set up an animal sanctuary there.
This Jigsaw Puzzle Book version is a hard back book . The illustration on the front is excellent. The words Guess How Much are in a lovely blue shade and the words I Love You are in a warm red which eminates a loving tone. The words Jigsaw Puzzle Book are beneath this in a warm brown shade. To the left of this we have a wonderful picture of Little Nutbrown Hare and Big Nutbrown Hare gazing lovingly at one another with Little Nutbrown Hare holding a large jigsaw piece. He holds his finger to his mouth as if to portray a feeling of being unsure as to where the piece will fit in the jigsaw.
As you open the book to reveal the first pages, your launched instantly into the story. Theres no pages dedicated to publishing information which is usually the norm and it does make a refreshing change to get straight into a story as opposed to hunting for the first real page in amongst the publishing information pages usually at the front of any book. With every turn of the page, the story is situated on the left whilst the right is always dedicated to a 12 piece jigsaw . Each jigsaw bears a different illustration and theres a small indentation which allows you to grip an edge to remove the jigsaw pieces without damaging them. There are seven 12 piece jigsaws in total and I feel that this represents great value for money - the book retails at £9.99 - as well as helping to provide plenty of fun. I also feel that the jigsaws help with the young readers co-ordination and thought processes. They also allow for a good level of interaction between parent and child. I certainly feel very close and involved when I read this with my Daughter Manal Amani.
The story itself centres on two characters. Little Nubrown Hare and Big Nutbrown Hare. Though it does not state this in the book - I can see that Little Nutbrown Hare and Big Nutbrown Hare are parent and child and more specifically Father and Son as both are referred to as 'He' at times.
Little Nutbrown hare is on his way to bed, holding onto Big Nutbrown Hares long ears. This was because He wanted to ensure that Big Nutbrown Hare was listening carefully. " Guess How Much I Love You" he said. Big Nutbrown Hare remarks on how he doesnt think he can guess this and Little Nutbrown hare responds by opening his arms as wide as possible to demonstrate the enormity of his love for Big Nutbrown Hare. But Big Nutbrown Hare can open his arms wider and therefore in Little Nutbrown Hare's mind, Big Nutbrown Hare has more love. Little Nutbrown Hare then proceeds to demonstrate a greater love using a variety of ways from standing on his tippy toes and stretching his arms up high to hopping the highest he possibly can. Not to be outdone, Big Nutbrown Hare overcomes Little Nutbrown Hares attempts to demonstrate his measurement of love several times. Finally, Little Nutbrown Hare has an idea to remark "I love you right up to the moon and back" before sleep overcomes Him and at this Big Nutbrown Hare responds softly by saying " I love you right up to the moon.......................and back".
I feel that this shows how a Mother or Fathers love is greater than any other experience of love.
I know that the love for my Daughter Manal Amani cannot be matched - it is unrivalled and will never be exceeded by any other love I might possibly feel in my lifetime. It is entirely unique as well as infinate in volume.
This book measures 24 centimetres in width and in length and is 2 centimetres deep. This makes it quite a large and heavy book and it wouldnt fit on a normal bookcase other than when lying it down.
The book also has rounded edges which I feel is a really simple but effective idea. How many times have you caught yourself on the edge of a hardback book - believe me it hurts somewhat ! This is completely avoided by rounding these edges.
I have no hesitation in naming this as a must have book for all children. Youll enjoy no end of pleasurable moments with your child when reading this and children never tire of it.
This book is widely available in most bookstores in the high street as well as online.
The ISBN Number is 0-7445-8386-1
It is published by Walker Books Limited, firstly in 1994. The edition I am speaking of in my review is a 2003 edition.
Copyright of the text is of course Sam McBratney's and of the illustrations, Anita Jeram.
Guess How Much I Love You is a registered trademark of Walker Book Limited.
The book is manufactured in China and is typeset in Cochin.

Many thanks once again for reading my review. Ive really enjoyed doing this one and hope you enjoyed reading it just as much. If you dont already have this book - grab a copy !
Guess how much I love you is one of the most engaging children’s books ever written. It is a really simple short book, which shows how difficult it is to tell someone how much you love them.
Little nutbrown hare is about to go to bed but like many youngsters he wants to be reassured he is loved. He gets big nutbrown hares attention by pulling his ears forward, much as a small child pulls an adults face towards them when they want to ensure they ... ...hare to guess how much he loves him and stretches his little arms as wide as he can to show how great his love is. Big nutbrown hare replies that he loves the little hare as wide as he can stretch his arms, which is of course even wider!
The story continues with the little hare describing his love for the bigger hare as being as high as he can reach, again the bigger hare can reach even higher and says he to loves the little hare as high as he can ...

'Guess How Much I love You?' is a delightful little picture book for young children. It tells the story of Big Nutbrown Hare and Little Nutbrown Hare who both love each other very much. In fact, they love each other SO much that they find it difficult to describe just how much so they enter into a little guessing game with each other!
It all starts when Little Nutbrown Hare is getting ready for bed and before he goes he wants to make sure that Big ... ...lifts up the big hare's ears and whispers 'guess how much I love you?' to which the bigger hare replies that he couldn't possibly do that. So, in response Little Nutbrown Hare shows him by stretching his little arms as wide as he can and saying 'this much!' Big Nutbrown Hare responds by showing him that he also loves him that much by also stretching his arms as wide as they can go. Of course, his arms are longer so it looks like more!

My son, James is just three, he is a wonderfully considerate and giving boy. He shares his sweets and toys with other children as well as sharing the occasional knuckle sandwich with them; well he IS a boy after all. Even before he was born he was giving, he gave his Mum morning sickness, he gave me plenty of kicks in the back as his mother cuddled me and he gave his sister a book when she was born. The book was “Guess how much I love you.” ... ...I’m truthful, I suppose I ought to confess and say it was really me who bought the book. We had heard horror stories of jealous older children feeling pushed out by the arrival of a younger sibling, so the gift was something intended to smooth James’ acceptance by Molly. The book came with a pair of cuddly toys as well, so they had one each. The toys, hares, are the characters from the book, Big Nutbrown Hare and Little Nutbrown Hare. ...

...most effective and stunning results.
Guess How Much I Love You by Sam McBratney is a perfect example of this.
First published in 1994 it is on the surface a simple story-book with young children in mind.
However in just 20 pages, with no more than 30 words per page it conveys so much emotion and thought behind that greatest of mysteries, love.
From the moment we are born we are programmed to attach such importance to love, being loved and loving ... ...I don’t think I could guess that,” comes the reply from Big Nutbrown Hare.
So the challenge is set and Little Brown Hare takes it up with much enthusiasm, he stretches his arms as wide as they can go to show the width of his love, only trouble is Big Nutbrown Hare’s arms can stretch wider. Little Nutbrown Hare tries again, can his companion stretch higher than his love? Indeed he can.
Undaunted the smaller hare has another attempt, he says his ...

A Lot of Love in a Little Book
One of the first books my daughter acquired was this small, lovely book, ?GuesshowmuchIloveyou?. We were given this book from my mum to my daughter and later have added to it by finding a very large copy which is bigger than my daughter for only 50p which was a bargain. I am writing this review on the small hardback copy only though as this is the more common one of the two.
This book can be found on amazon for as little as only 1p used or just under £2 new though please do not think that the price effects the quality of this book as it certainly does not ? it is just a great bargain to get a great book so cheaply.

Call me sloppy but one of my favourite books is 'GuessHowMuchILoveYou' so when I was out and about and I saw 'It's Lovely When You Smile' by the same author I just had to get it and I wasn't disappointed. This book is so lovely and appeals to adults as well as children.
~ SamMcBratney / The Author ~
Probably best known for his award winning book 'GuessHowMuchILoveYou'
He has also written 'You're All My Favourites' which is a lovely story about how the parents try to explain that they love all of their children for different reasons but the same amount.
Most of his books explore the relationship between a child and a parent or adult carer.
~ It's Lovely When You Smile ~
Published in 2005, this is far less well known than 'GuessHowMuchILoveYou'.
