As some people may have noticed, we have a guinea pig. His name is Bradley and I'm a bit biased, but he deserves a review of his own!
Guinea pigs make great pets for people of all ages. They are small, portable, friendly, can be kept indoors or out and even house trained if you have lots of time to spare. They require very little maintenance but really do appreciate a daily cuddle or will even sit and listen if you want to have a chat while doing the housework. Guineas make great listeners. They are very gentle and will allow anyone to handle them if they are gentle too. Guinea pigs are not known for being very intelligent, but do recognise their owners and can be trained to do very simple things if the task is repeated often enough.
Health-wise they are really easy to keep - as long as they are cleaned out regularly and you keep an eye on the length of their teeth and claws they will reward you by being pleased to see you every day and even being entertaining! They don't really go for toys, although Bradley was once given an apple shaped and scented air freshener as a joke and he proceeded to play nose-ball with it. Food is pretty cheap - we just get the big purple bag from Tesco for every day munching but top it up with carrots, apples and other green veg to keep their skin and fur healthy. They keep themselves clean so only a very occasional bath is required, but regular brushing stimulates the skin, removes loose hairs and doesn't every animal love a back scratch?!
Ideally guinea pigs should be kept in pairs or small groups, same sex if at all possible. (Otherwise you get mini-guineas which are astonishingly cute but will grow rapidly and possibly end up producing more....) Bradley is a lone guinea but he thinks he's a person anyway - we bought him from a breeder where he had been kept on his own for a while and we were told he didn't get on with the other guineas much. This is unusual though and I would never recommend keeping a guinea on their own unless you know the history of the pig in question and are around quite a lot to keep them company.
Bradley is company for both me and the fella - the fella pretends to be tough but I once got home early and discovered him and Bradley cuddled up, fast asleep on the sofa with the telly on. From what I could tell, they'd been watching a Bruce Willis movie.
Bradley is getting on now in guinea pig years - a healthy pig can live up to seven years and he is starting to show his age a bit. That doesn't stop him making an unholy racket when he's hungry or wants his water topping up! He has also been known to follow me around when we've let him out in the living room and even sulk if we haven't got any carrots in.
All guinea pigs have characters but they all follow the basic model of being very placid, gentle animals with simple needs. Bradley is unusual because of his early weeks and being the only pet in the house, but any guinea pig will come to know and entertain you if you spend time getting to know them.
PS: I'm not sure what's going on with this category but the criteria section refers to guinea pigs as food....

Lovely review and Bradley sounds gorgeous. I think Bradley would be highly insullted as being labelled an unintelligent creature....I'd like you to go off now and find him the biggest carrot you can to make up for your cheek! LOL Linda x

Advantages: The male can live with the female with no unwanted babies & its supposed to stop males from smelling as bad! Disadvantages: Can be fatal if the operation goes wrong!
