Guinness World Records 2003 - Anon.

Guinness World Records 2003 - Anon.

The deliciously pointless thing about Guinness World Records is that each year is more ... more

extravagantly eccentric than the last as people
try to beat current records or to dream up new
ones to set--the more outlandish the better. Andre
Ludwick of South Africa, for example, holds the
2003 record for the world's largest collection of
nail clippers. He has 505 pairs. Doubtless by 2004
someone will have more. And someone somewhere must
already be amassing aeroplane sick bags at top
speed in order to beat the current record holder
Niek Vermeulen of the Netherlands. Guinness World
Records began life in 1955 as The Guinness Book of
Records because Sir Hugh Beaver, managing director
of Guinness, the Irish brewing company, believed
that the world needed a definitive reference book
to settle pub-based arguments about records. Over
47 years it has grown into an institution.. Where
else do you look to find out who holds the record
for winning the most womens' swimming Olympic
medals? (Dawn Fraser, Australia). Who is the
world's most tattooed woman? Krstyne Kolorful,
Canada 95% of whose body is tattooed. And Terry
Cole of the UK holds the record for the useful
skill of cigar box balancing. On April 24, 1992 he
supported 220 on his chin for nine seconds.
Guinness World Records is, as always, an
entertaining browse particularly in the section on
Modern Society and Buildings and Structures which
are new for 2003. --Susan Elkin

Guinness World Records 2002 - Guinness

Guinness World Records 2002 - Guinness

Nearly 50 years after the first edition was published, Guinness World Records isn't so ... more

much a book as an institution, having sold over 90
million copies to date, in 23 different languages.
Every year, its publishers find ever crazier new
achievements to include, for example the
live-insect eating capers of England's own Ken
Edwards, who's crunched 36 medium-sized
cockroaches in one minute. Or Spain's tomatina
festival, the world's largest food fight--at the
1999 event 25,000 people spent one hour hurling
around 120 tonnes of tomatoes at each other. Then
there's French adventurer Remy Bricka, the first
man to walk all the way across the Atlantic Ocean.
He made it from the Canary Islands to the
Caribbean on floating skis 4.2 meters long. It
took him 31 days, and when he finally arrived in
Trinidad he was reported to have been
hallucinating and suffering from severe delirium.
The 2002 edition includes lots of links to the
Guinness World Records Web site, so that trivia
junkies can feed their addiction even more.
Colourfully illustrated--the photos are often very
striking--it includes a high proportion of rather
eccentric records, such as "most batteries in a
work of art" or "most sequined body", which will
irritate some readers and delight others. Numerous
more "serious" records retain a place, but the
emphasis is on the spectacular, sensational and
just plain wacky. --David Pickering

Guinness World Record Breaker!

Advantages: Good variation of mini-games
Disadvantages: Can lose its appeal to adults quickly

...I used to get a Guinness Book of Records every year for Christmas so I've always been quite interested in the whole idea of the records. When I saw that there was a Videogame dedicated to the records, I could not resist.

The game begins by giving you the option to choose a character which you can customise in a way similar to that of the Miis. Clothes, hair colour, accessories and, of course, name. At this point, I must say, mine looks ...
...are straight into the action.

There are around 40 mini-games available to play but you have to 'unlock' them by completing the basic games and earning enough to points to play the more advanced ones. The games are all fairly easy to play but sometimes the instructions are not explained clearly enough and you have to figure it out as you play the game. Which, of course, gives the next player an unfair advantage but, in the grand scheme ... more

Fun game with a REALLY irritating theme tune

Advantages: lots of games, fun
Disadvantages: annoying music!

Guiness World Records is a really captivating game with many mini games for you to break records on. From the normal to the really strange there are all means of records you can get your teeth into . For example you can try to break the record on how high you can get your BMX bike or alternatively see how many miles you can clip someone's finger nails or how quick you can eat a plane! You navigate the game via a globe in which you can click on the ...
...you have to complete the first mini game in that section before you can progress onto completing the next two. When completing the tasks you can try to break the world record, create a personal best or a local record. You also have the option to hook the game up to the Internet via wifi and see how you are doing compared to everyone else. Initially the game is very fun but after a while the novely begins to wear off. The theme tune is increasingly ...
