I'm a Guitar Hero addict. This series of rhythm based guitar playing has completely restored my faith in gaming. After a particularly bland spot through the early 00's of story based games I found myself buying SNES and Megadrive games on Ebay to satisfy my need for good old fashioned pick up and play enjoyment. Guitar Hero is the first game to really capture that spirit again, in my humble opinion.
For those out there unfamiliar with the series, Guitar Hero is a rhythm based game that sees you becoming the lead guitarist of a band. Replacing the usual PlayStation 2 controller is a Gibson SG shaped guitar controller, with five coloured 'fret' buttons on the neck of the guitar, a strumming bar (where you would strum the strings) and a whammy bar. This is your instrument, and as coloured dots descend down your tv screen towards you your task is to hold the right note and strum at the right time, thus playing the note in the song. Simple premise. Unbelievably satisfying, addictive, challenging and fun.
So Guitar Hero 3. I'd already played every track on Guitar Hero 2 and it's predecessor a hundred times before the eagerly awaited item arrived. Initial impressions? Disappointment. I didn't like the graphical change from the rest of the series and the song list just didn't seem to appeal with the exception of about 5 songs. However, through much playing I have grown to love the new look, and the song list is wonderfully diverse and challenging. There is something in this game for all different kinds of music lovers - grunge? Pearl Jam. Indie? Kaiser Chiefs, The Killers. Rock? Alice Cooper, Aerosmith, ZZ Top, Guns N Roses. Glam? Poison, KISS. Metal? Metallica, Slayer and the crowning glory that is Iron Maiden. There really is something for everyone - my mother picked it up and pounced on a song by Cream. Classic! Another huge plus point is that the game is easier to pick up, with the hammer on and pull off techniques in particular much much easier to get to grips with. Luckily to cope with this the developers have upped the difficulty level. The last set of songs on Expert are mind blowingly difficult and will leave you with some aching hands for sure.
So how does it fare? Great songs, incredible replay value, one of the best party games on the market and a clever learning curve make this game a must have for fans of the first 3 releases and certainly one to consider for anyone looking for a good party game or a game to never put down.
