I drooled over this game for a while before someone finally brought it for me for Christmas. Since then, it's the only game to have been in the playstation!
I have the game which comes boxed up with the controller, this costs around £50 in most places, though I have seen it slightly cheaper more recently. It is possible to buy the game without the controller which is obviously cheaper, but I don't consider this option worthwhile as the game play is not at all the same without the correct controller, however I belive that the controllers from the two previous guitar hero games are compatible with this one.. The game is sold in many high street stores, such as HMV and Game Station and can also be easily found on the internet.
The controller for the game is a small plastic wireless guitar. It has 5 couloured fret buttons, a stummer and a whammy bar. No previous knowledge of guitars is necessary and the tutorials can teach you everything you need to know to start playing.
There is a career mode in the game, where you name a band, start off with a few songs and work your way through from
the easy to hard songs. In between the basic song list you get encore's and guitar battles. There is also a co-op career option where you can play with a friend. The game has a quickplay option which I find good for parties and such where everyone wants to have a go. This allows to to choose any song to play that you have so far unlocked on the game.
The game has four difficulty levels, easy, medium, hard and expert. Easy uses only three of the fret buttons, medium uses four and hard and expert use all five. The speed picks up on the higher levels. I have managed to work my way through easy and medium. I am now attempting hard. I have had a quick look at expert and to be honest, it scares me! Alot of practice is needed if you want to get really good at this game.
The graphics are not the most stunning I have ever seen, but they are more than ok and to be honest I don't think anyone is going to be buying this game for the graphics anyway! The graphics are overall quite cartoony but nicely done.
There is a good range of songs on the game and some well known bands, I'm sure there is something to interest everybody, young or old. Overall this is a good game, it's chalenging (but not so much so that you want to give up), appeals to a wide audience and is very enjoyable. It is a little expensive, but well worth the money!
