The third installment in the prolific Guitar Hero needed to be good in order to match its rival Rock Band, and it doesn't disappoint. Activision has produced the best in the series so far, and the rival games will have to step up to match this one.
The aim of Guitar Hero 3 - Legends of Rock retains the same gameplay as the previous two. Using a special guitar-shaped controller, the players aim is to hit notes as they scroll towards the bottom of the screen in time with the music to boost their score whilst busting out an awesome tune. The user has to press down the correct fret buttons whilst strumming the pick in time in order to successfully play the song, and get the crowd going.
By hitting the notes correctly and generating sequences of correct notes hit in a row, your guitarists performance meter goes up. However, if you miss too many notes in a row, the crowd will become unhappy, and you will fail the song. To add to the reality of the guitar experience, the game also simulates hammer-ons and a whammy bar, which makes it all the more realistic and
believable.
There are 4 difficulty levels - EASY, which uses only three of the frets, MEDIUM, which uses four of the frets, HARD, which utilizes all five frets, and EXPERT, which adds to the number of notes and the complexity of the patterns. To cater for all the Guitar Hero enthusiasts out there, EXPERT will seem insanely hard to a beginner, so the game has a good degree of longevity.
The mode you will probably play on most is Career mode. First of all you select your character, of which there are a nice selection of fictional guitarists to pick from. With this guitarist you can buy new guitars, new outfits, and new songs to customize the experience.
Next, you choose the difficulty, and then you're ready to get underway. Each difficulty features the same 42 songs for you to master, in 8 tiers which represent gigs or concerts. Alongside your playing there is a little storyline which sees you and the band starting out as a neighborhood group and becoming a sensation.
Guitar Hero 3 also features rock battles, against rock legends Tom Morello and Slash, and then finally against 'Lou the Devil', but can also be used on network play. This great new feature lets two guitarists battle it out through their music, and 'attacking' the other by using powers to make them miss notes. For example, one of these is the 'Amp Overload' which makes the notes flash awkwardly on the screen. If you successfully make your opponent miss enough notes, you win the battle.
You can also play a co-op career mode, which is arranged similarly to the normal career mode, with one player being the lead guitarist and the other being rhythm guitarist or bass. This mode also has a storyline, which goes along the same sort of lines as the single career mode, with a few alterations.
The soundtrack of the game was always going to be important, and it doesn't disappoint either. Featuring songs such as 'Metallica - One', 'Kaiser Chiefs - Ruby', 'Muse - Knights Of Cydonia', and 'Alice Cooper - School's Out' to name but a few, you can see what a great range and variety of terrific guitar songs. It's just a shame that there aren't even more songs, or an option to upload your own songs on the game, to increase the longevity of the game further.
The graphics are pretty unimportant on this game, and they've made them as good as needs be. The notes are easy to see, clear and concise, whilst the video in the background has quite good graphics, but are totally unnoticeable to a player, who will be focused on the game. The comic-style animations used for the storyline are well produced, and fit in with the theme of the game well.
The best thing about this game is the incredible addictiveness of the gameplay. It is hard to see what is so brilliant about hitting buttons at the same time as they come down the screen, but once you play the game, you'll never be able to stop until you've completed EXPERT difficulty.
A potential flaw in the game is the price. Getting the game and guitar from www.amazon.co.uk will set you back £45, which is a high price to pay for any PS2 game, but I can guarantee that you will play on this game much more than most of your others. A must-have for any guitar player, rock fan, or any games enthusiast.
