Ever since the first guitar hero game was released a few years ago the title has exploded into one of this generations most popular games. This massive growth in popularity has guitar hero 3 to thank, in my opinion the best game the series has ever seen.

It's difficult to review a single game in the series without taking into account all of the others, since all of them rely on the same simple concept, so i will break this review down to include my opinions on all aspects of both the series and this game specifically.

THE CONCEPT
============
First of all the concept of the guitar hero series. Basically the idea is to strum notes corisponding to the order which the appear on the screen to play a song with the correct rythm and notes. The player uses a 5 button plastic guitar which a strum button to signify pressing down on strings and strumming them with the other hand.

This is an amazingly fun idea and if it's your thing then can be the most addictive and challenging gaming experience that has been seen for years. Guitarists will say that it is nothing like playing real guitar and obviously this is true but only in the same way that playing a racing game with steering wheel is not the same as driving a real car, the actions are all the same but it is a simplified concept to allow anyone to do what usually takes years to accomplish. The thing about guitar hero is, it may be nothing like playing real guitar but it ticks the most important box in any video game......it's fun.

Yes if you pick up any guitar hero game and controller its nearly impossible to not enjoy yourself, and soon find yourself bouncing across the room rocking out as you are sucked into the game and its portrayl of the rock and roll life style. and from novice to expert it's accessible for enjoyment by pretty much everyone.

Activision came up with a winning formula from the offset, an amazingly fun game, great songs to play and a game which can be as casual as it is intense.

LEGENDS OF ROCK - THE MUSIC
===========================
The reason i say legends of rock is the best game in the series (past and future) is for 3 main reasons. The first and most important of all being the set list. While in other guitar hero games there have been the ocassional song where you think "hmm maybe skip that on" because they just aren't enjoyable enough to bother with, Legends of rock delivers classic hit after hit after hit, with each track offering something new and awesome, weather its the fun melodics of my name is jonas or the challenging and satisfying shreds of cliffs of dover, every song delivers as much fun as it does the challenge of completing expert difficulty.

At the time the game offered the biggest set list, with bonus tracks and download content, it was nearly impossible for anyone to not find a song they loved, as the series progressed (adding new instruments to the mix) the selection of songs becomes too broad, finding only a few awesome songs on each game, since the developers had to find songs that were fun to play across all the peripherals. This is why Legends of Rock has the best set list, its right in the middle, before the selection of songs became to complex (only focussing on Awesome guitar parts) and late enough for the series to have gained notoriety enough for the developers to choose pretty much any ong by any artist they wanted (where earlier on they were limited to choosing bad covers and only songs where the record company would agree)
And on top of this Legends of rock offers the most difficult song ever to hit the series Through Fire and Flames by Dragonforce.

THE GRAPHICS
============
Visually legends of rock is the pinacle of the series, more effort went into making it more visually exciting than earlier games, where the band rocked with more realism to the song, the menu's are fun and inviting and the graphics (although not necessarily important in this type of game) are at their best. There is a small set number of characters to choose from and everything from the menus to the HUD just scream ROCK, it's as if it were designed by Bill and Ted, everything just encompasses the "Rock On" attitude of the game.

In my opinion they lost this later on in the series, with all the HUD becoming more conserved, more informative than fun, and just a little bit less exciting, as if bill and ted had grown up, got steady jobs and 2 kids to support.

THE CONTROLS
=============

The controls are the third thing that make Guitar hero 3 the king, First off the controller is the best they have ever made, with a sturdy build better button presses than the original models, and overall the best shape. before the makers tried to overcomplicate the concept with additional buttons or slide bars.

Not only is the controller the best yet, the control system is made a change for the better, which was unfortunately only kept on for legends of rock, let me try and explain. A key part of the game is the hammer-ons, this is where the player can play a notes without having to strum as long as the previous note was hit. in guitar hero 3 this is the most forgiving in any of the titles, where you can press slightly before the actual note is on screen where in older or newer titles the press has to come accurately which makes gameplay not only more difficult but also more frustrating.

All this culminates in not only making Guitar hero 3 a great game, but the best guitar hero game on the market at the moment. A must have.
