Being an avid fan of the previous Guitar Hero games, my name was one of the first on the pre-order list. My little bundle of joy arrived through my letter box yesterday morning (the day after the release date) delivered from HMV.com with free delivery, totalling £26.99 (with student discount).
In the box, you get the add-on part with the coloured buttons that you insert into the GameBoy Advance slot on your DS, a seperate attachement that you have to use if you are using an old style DS, a plectrum stylus, the game catridge, a game case, two sticker sheets and the instructions - though don't ask me what they say, I figured I would work everything out along the way.
The add-on part comes with an adjustable velcro strap so that every size of hand will fit. When you have connected it to the DS, put the game in and turned on the DS, you are ready to begin. The opening screens view the correct way to hold the DS with the controller, and then takes you to the main menu. You have the option of choosing from Single Player, Multiplayer, Options and Credits.
In the Options menu, you can clear global data, adjust audio options, set the mic sensitivity, lefty flip the game and flip the colours.
Multiplayer
gives you the option of playing DS to DS. the options allow you to join a game or host your own. Unfortunately I can't go into anymore detail about multiplayer as I am the first of my friends to get the game, and therefore haven't played on multiplayer yet!
In the single player menu, you can choose career mode, guital duels, quickplay, practice and tutorial. Quickplay, practice and tutorial are fairly self-explanitory, as is Career mode if you have ever played Guitar Hero before.
For those who haven't played guitar hero before, you can start a career band on easy, normal, hard or expert, and work your way through five venues with five different setlists with five different songs. Each venue you complete opens another venue, and every four songs you unlock an encore song. You can also unlock different guitars, characters and outfits along the way which are available to buy in the guitar store using the money you earn from playing the different venues.
Guitar Duels is the new name for battles from the PS3 game. It involves collecting weapons to use agains a computer component to win the song.
Approximately 85% of the songs are master recordings - the rest being covered mainly by "The Wavegroup". It is also nice to have a DS game where you can listen to real quality music rather than dodgy .midi files. The songs included are: * "Do What You Want" -- OK Go * "All The Small Things" -- Blink 182 * "Spiderwebs" -- No Doubt * "Are You Gona Be My Girl" -- Jet * "We're Not Gonna Take It" -- Twisted Sister * "All Star" -- Smash Mouth * "Breed" -- Nirvana * "Jessie's Girl" -- Rick Springfield * "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" -- Pat Benatar * "This Love" -- Maroon 5 * "Heaven" -- Los Lonely Boys * "Helicopter" -- Bloc Party * "China Grove" -- The Doobie Brothers * "Rock and Roll All Nite" -- KISS * "What I Want" -- Daughtry *"Jet Airliner" -- Steve Miller Band *"Black Magic Woman" -- Santana *"Stray Cat Strut" -- Stray Cats *"La Grange" -- ZZ Top *"Youth Gone Wild" -- Skid Row *"I Don't Wanna Stop" -- Ozzy Osbourne *"Anna Molly" -- Incubus *"Knock Me Down" -- Red Hot Chili Peppers *"Pride And Joy" -- Stevie Ray Vaughan *"I Know A Little" -- Lynyrd Skynyrd
The game play is not particularly different from any other Guitar Hero game,it is just much more portable.
I have a few issues with the add-on part. Firstly, it comes out of the GameBoy Advance slot VERY easily, and this then makes the game come up with a "please turn off the system and reconnect" message. This can be extremely irritating as it can happen in the middle of a song and therefore losing you all those points. Another thing is that after only one day of having it, I now have a bruise over the bone in my hand just underneath my left pinky finger, due to the way you have to hold the DS to stop the grip falling out and in order to reach all four different colour buttons. I'm not sure if there is a way you can stop either of these things happening, other than maybe using some velcro pads to secure the add-on piece to your DS, and wearing a plaster over the aforementioned bone - both of which will probably look quite unsightly.
It is also quite difficult to use the whammy bar when you first play, but you get used to after it after a few songs.
My other disappointment was that about five of the songs in Guitar Hero On Tour feature on Guitar Hero III, which is a bit lazy in my opinion. I'm sure with such a major franchise they could have stretched to another five new songs, but then I suppose they are saving up for Guitar Hero World Tour for the PS3.
So in conclusion, I am pleased that Guitar Hero is now available to play on DS, and enjoy it as much as the other Guitar Hero games on other platforms, but I hope that if the makers plan to bring out a sequel, they will think about the issues I have raised.

Advantages: Same easy to play fun as previous games, new fan challenges Disadvantages: Less variety to the music than in previous games as all songs are from last 5 years
Advantages: New songs for this game. Better gameplay Disadvantages: Still have to use the guitar grip which hurts your wrist quite a bit. Plus weak music
