Guitar hero is the first of 2 games in the series by red octane. It is for the PS2 and is rated 12+. It's a 1 or 2 player game and can be played with the guitar controller or a normal PS2 analogue controller. The guitar controller is supplied in most packages for this game and the second in the series. I love this game and when I got it for Christmas I was so happy and couldn't wait to get it fired up and start rocking.

Being some one who doesn't play the Play station that much my parents were kind of surprised that I had asked for a game for Christmas but now even they have a shot of it!!!

The game is sponsored by Gibson, a major guitar company, So all of the guitars in game are Gibson's and the Guitar controller is modelled on the Gibson SG.

- The Box-
The box for the package is about a meter long and 30cm wide (approx.) and contains the SG style controller and the game. Also included is a set of Red Octane stickers!!! The box is mainly black and displays clearly what is in it and in game pictures. The box for the game is a usual PS2 slim line box in blue and the cover is much like the big box, Black and shows one of the characters in the game. The Guitar hero logo is very Punk and jaggy sticking out in white on the black box.

-The Guitar-
The controller for this game is a Black Gibson SG with a white scratch plate. It has a tremolo bar (or a whammy bar) fitted and 2 white buttons on the body. The 2 buttons are the select and start buttons found in the middle of a normal PS2 controller. On the neck there are 5 Coloured buttons that are needed to play the actual game. For more authenticity there is even a strap so you can rock while standing up and really look the part! In the middle of the scratch plate there is the strum bar, this is what is needed to move on the options menus and to select when to play a note. The whole guitar is almost an exact scale model of the real Gibson SG.

-Instructions-
The instructions come in various different languages and are very clear, using diagrams and pictures of the menus and buttons.
Personally I never really use the instructions, I prefer to try to work it out myself and even then there are usually in game instructions and hints along the way (and this game does)

-The game-
The all-important game. In the game you can choose from 8 characters, 6 venues and over 30 songs to unlock. There are also 4 difficulty levels. On the start menu you can choose quick play or career, on quick play you can only play songs and use venues you have previously unlocked and in career mode you can unlock new venues and songs by working your way down the list of songs. Once you have played a gig in career mode you will be told the star rating of your performance and are told the cut of the cash you will receive. With this cash you can by new guitars, new characters and even new guitar paints and designs. The un-lockable guitars range from the double necked SG to the famous Gibson Explorer. The only problem is that you can't buy upgrades in easy mode
Once you pick a song and a difficulty it is quite easy to work out what to do. The colours of notes that appear on the screen co-ordinate to the ones on the controller and you have to hold it and use the strum button when it gets to the circle at the bottom (a bit like a dance mat). You will get bonuses for lots of notes played in a row and when you get enough you can play vertically to get extra points.
When long notes are played you can use the tremolo to get extra points aswell.

-Other notes-
You can get this game for £40 with the controller in most game shops.
Please note just because you are good at this game doesn't mean you can play guitar!!! (And vice versa).
Make sure nobody watches you because I can guaranty you will drop to your knees or thrash around!!

-Conclusion-
I love this game and would recommend it to everyone, I really want the second game to see if it is any good as well. 
5 stars!!

Thanx, being a guitar player myself I really wanted this item. I'm just in the process of bidding for one on ebay, looking forward to it now. Thanx. Kirsty.

A good review. Never really liked this much. I have the e-toy, dance mats and singster (well my Mrs and kids do) but we never really went for this. Leeroy ~Onwards and Upwards~

A good review - not being a guitar player - or a gamer, my buying decision remains unaltered. Richard.
