We know a great deal about the Nazi death camps, but almost nothing about the vast network of labour camps which were once scattered across Russia - from the White Sea to the Black...
more...Sea, and from the Arctic circle to the plains of Central Asia. This work draws together the mass of memoirs published in Russia and digests the vast archival materials now available. The gulag had antecedents in Czarist Russia but took its modern form in the Soviet era. But it is wrong to believe that it came to an end with the Stalinist era. Throughout the 70 years of the Soviet Union, the camps remained the state's ultimate weapon, serving the same purpose: to punish, to isolate and, above all, to frighten.

A very challenging book not for the faint hearted. I am an avid reader of similar books, (prison accounts, WWII Camps) and rushed out to buy as soon as available. I noticed after only a couple of chapters that i was having to look back and cross reference facts and figures , due to the sheer volume of information it contained. Allthough not a major drawback i did find it took a little enjoyment from the read. A suitable reading environment is essential, i read many books on journeys, but found that this was only a book suitable for solitary contemplation, as any slight distractions made it difficult to follow. As a new reader of this genre it would be perhaps too in depth and some basic reading of Russian political and social history would be advisable. Ultimately for history fans a challenging but rewarding read.
