The bathroom was what made me and the Boyf buy our house. We'd viewed many properties and the bathroom was where people just couldn't be bothered - we viewed avocado, orange, peach, pink, powder blue and brown bath suites before we finally saw Our House with its huge white corner bath and bi-foldshower screen and we wept with joy.
Fast forward a few years and by now the bottom of the folding shower screen is looking quite brown and manky and no amount of scrubbing, spraying or going hell-for-leather with a nailbrush can shift the nasty brown stuff which has accumulated in the rubber trim. To my absolute disgust and horror, black mould has suddenly sprung up on the silicon sealant - largely caused by the Boyf having been a fish in a previous life and drenching everything in a 1 mile radius whenever he uses the shower and never opening the window afterwards because "It's really cold". Wuss.
I
trekked to Bluewater last Friday and whilst there went into one of my favourite shops - Lakeland Limited (yes, I know I'm sad) and bought a bottle of HG Mould Remover. I've used an HG product in the past and was very impressed so I had high hopes for this spray.
~ What is it? ~
It's a half litre pump spray bottle of solution which destroys mould and algae (those yucky black or brown spots) on practically every surface you could dream of. Silicon sealant, grouting, walls, double glazing frames, plant pots, paving slabs - you name it, you can spray it on it!
The product comes in a large box and you need to assemble the spray bottle yourself which I found quite sensible - how many times have you schlepped home from the shops with a trigger bottle of some cleaning fluid only to find it's leaked either all over the boot of the car or left a nice drip-trail Hansel and Gretel style all the way home. You get:- A bottle with a child (and Woo) proof lid. A fat clear plastic tube. The trigger part.
To assemble you finally get off the Woo Proof Cap after much scrabbling and cussing, the bottle has a stuck on plastic lid, I couldn't peel off the whole thing so just jabbed a hole in it with the point of a pair of scissors. You then push the tube into the underneath of the trigger spray (there's an obvious hole where it goes). Put this onto the bottle, twist it to secure and away you go!
~ How do I use it? ~
Any room that has brown or black mould spots can be sprayed. Be careful though as the product is water-thin so extreme care needs to be taken if using near carpets, curtains and other soft furnishings.
So, see black mould, spray, leave for half an hour, rinse and repeat.
~ My Experience ~
I have several areas in my bathroom in need of treatment (I have 'Before' pics for you to shudder in horror at) so I gave a liberal spraying to ensure the spray covered everything as the fact the walls were horizontal meant the product ran straight down them PDQ.
This is the part where you think I am exaggerating but I am not, honest. I turned round to put the spray back in the box, I then turned back round to face the bath [so I could leave the room] and the mould on the silicon sealant and on the grout had totally gone. The black yuck on the shower screen was reduced by about 50% (again, I have a truly nasty before pic - please don't think any less of me!) so I decided to leave it the full 30 minutes before rinsing and repeating as in this instance I decided to break with tradition and follow the rules for a change.
After rinsing and repeating, all black and brown stains had totally completely and utterly gone on the sealant and over 90% of the yuck on the shower screen had gone too. It was quite tricky to take some of the 'After' pics - I did take some pictures of grouting as some areas had brown discoloration but the spray worked so well, I couldn't tell where I had sprayed so you'll have to take my word for it I'm afraid.
~ The Good ~
In short, it works and it works fast and I have the 'After' pics to prove it! I did splash a drop of this on my hand and although my hand reeked of bleach for ages, it didn't sting or cause any redness. The trigger spray isn't one of those that wheezes and leaks all over your hand but I'd suggest wearing rubber gloves just incase.
~ The Bad ~
It smells of really really strong bleach. You will need to open windows and close doors to prevent your whole house smelling of the stuff as it travels well and don't go shutting yourself in a shower enclosure and start spraying away or you'll probably be overcome with the smell!
~ Conclusion ~
I have no hesitation in recommending this spray to you. I have used bleaches and other lotions, potions, powders and copious lashings of elbow grease in the past but to no avail, this did the job and I am extremely pleased. The only snag is this spray might be hard to track down - luckily I know there is a shop somewhere in Woodford, Essex that stocks the whole gamut of HG products so I'll be tracking them down and going there soon to buy more of their sprays and stuff - if not, you can always purchase from Lakeland Limited either in person or on-line.
~ Other Info ~
Product code (for Lakeland) is 20284 and it costs £4.95 plus P&P.
Rather surprisingly the HG website says that the spray can also be used to remove tea and coffee stains from plastic surfaces (not tried that!).
